where is me?
where is me?
I laugh when runners say this:
"Lay off the weights my friends, it is a thing of the devil (Mr Chest)."
Or when women say they don't lift because they don't want to get big. You won't put on much muscle mass if you are running alot. They just do not go together. All your extra calories will be burned or used to rebuild leg muscle, not to build much new muscle in the upper body. It is very hard to get big. Doing a short economy workout 3 times a week with a few general exercises hitting a few major upper body muscle groups won't add but a pound or two of muscle in a runner doing much mileage and might help the persons ratio of muscle to fat. To get big, you have to have the proper genetic propensity and you can't do much aerobic work and you have to lift and eat alot.
Doing a few sets of upper body weight will keep you strong, a little cut, and lean. Especially for folks who have trouble keeping fat weight off, lifting will route those calories to building muscle instead of stored fat.
...it would seem to imply all hope is lost for the tall runner who is heavier, not owing to more muscle or fat, but merely owing to more skeletal structure. There are structural disadvantages to height in distance running, but I don't think aerobic power is one of them. The differences would just be too great between a 6'3 guy who weighs 165 and a 5'6 guy who weighs 120 to account for the tall guys who have had success - it would imply without the burden of the height induced weight, guys like Maher, LeMay or Bachelor would have been unstoppable.
I really seem to run better when I lift 3 or 4 times per week. I started lifting in HS and went from a 10:50 pud to a 9:40 slightly less of a pud. I'm 6' and lanky, and when I lift it seems to make me feel faster, agile and aggressive. But I'm one of those people who doesn't really bulk up, I just get more defined and stringier looking.
AEROBIC power! Lay off the weights my friends, it is a thing of the devil (Mr Chest).
Get your body lite by eating & drinking lite, so you can cruise efficiently and naturally as you should.
I would rather be a "freak" of the fat massess than one of the crowd.
I went through a; do weights to look good this summer" and my running turned to shit.
Now I am wise and do what I am engineered for : To run fast and puncture Mr Chest's chest like his "football career f***ed up, runners attack injury".
