He said "we cannot quite know what will happen." Not knowing is the opposite of thinking AI is going to kill us.

Seriously, this topic has been addressed in many si-fi movies and the human race always triumphs. Mr. Hawking really needs to pull his head out of his ass and take a look around.

Si-fi tends to come true more often than science does. I'm getting kind of fed up with scientists thinking their theories hold up against real-world empirical evidence.

I saw a trailer recently for a movie on Stephen Hawking and it looks like it's going to be a romance. Made me laugh a little bit.

I've been reading a lot of SciFi lately, and renegade AI is a common theme. I'm all for it. Push ahead. We may not be smart enough to figure out FTL travel for instance, but maybe we are smart enough to create something that can.

I believe that humans need to expand beyond Earth to have long term chance at survival (as measured by thousands of years).

I recommend Hyperion and Fall of Hyperion as books that explore some of this.

Silly scientist. The AI computers will teach us how to chop off our heads and upload our consciousness into computers so we will join them in Utopia!

I didn't read the article, but I doubt Hawking said AI is going to kill us, at least not directly and not based on the current AI we know of. Prof Hawking is certainly smarter than me and perhaps he is thinking so far into the future that's it's beyond my imagination. However, based on everything I know, which is a career spent in IT, it is simply not possibly. Number one, AI is still a computer and a computer is electronic circuitry, which requires electrical power. Without electrical power, which require humans to generate, a computer is more useless than a brick. At its core, all a computer does is use math/logic to executes 'stored' programs/instructions which we create. A computer cannot do anything without us, they need power and input, both of which comes from humans. Now, with that said, it is possible we could become so reliant on computers that they could one day accidentally cause major power outages, a nuclear explosion, etc., but even that would not destroy the human race. - Btw, because a person is smart, it does not mean they know everything and does not say stupid things from time to time.

All you need to know about singularity was in The Terminator. Ahnold will be sent back from the future to assassinate Sergey Brin and Larry Page. Game over player two.

Check out the concepts of self awareness and the nature of sentience as illustrated by Masamune Shirow in his masterworks, Ghost in the Shell.

And time travel is impossible. Don't try to mussy the waters with jokes and fallacies.

TrackCoach, the whole idea behind The Singularity is that computers, by virtue of AI, will be building replicas of themselves (robots), and each successive release (artificial evolution) will build more powerful and efficient machines that will make humans obsolete - and it will happen at a very fast rate. Thinking logically, the machines will therefore act in their own self interest to protect themselves, either by destroying (Terminator) or enslaving humans (Matrix).

That's all late-night substance-enhanced dormitory blather. But drunken philosophy has an answer to every common sense hurdle you put in front of them. Power outages you say? The machines will have already prepared for that, creating new technologies to generate and store electricity. Even if we have a direct hit from a major solar storm which would completely wipe out all electrical machinery? The machines will create a defense for that too? See how easy that is?

There's a reason why they call it science fiction - that pesky operative word is "fiction". All you need to know about singularity was in The Terminator. Ahnold will be sent back from the future to assassinate Sergey Brin and Larry Page. Game over. You’ve already seen what happens in the movie.
