I've paid some attention to this. As far as the rest of the world seems to be concerned, it's all a question of what stereotypes they've been exposed to in the media. If you're in pretty much any larger city / urban place anywhere on earth, it's New York people are most impressed with. Elsewhere, it's usually one of the "tropical" seeming places. Hawaii, California (everything is considered LA, warm/sunny, bikinis etc), Florida. I was born and raised in Florida and lived much of my life after 18 in Texas. Now living mainly in Europe the last 5 years, people are very impressed when they hear I am from Florida, and almost always incredulous over why on earth I would ever leave it. When they hear Texas, they ask if I was a cowboy and rode a horse. Which for 4 years in fact I was and did, for a living.

Basically the rest of the world doesn't know or care anything about the USA except for what they've seen of cinema NYC, Baywatch, Miami Vice, and John Wayne movies. Frankly I envy their ignorance.

I'd say New York. I've had people not give me the time of day abroad and once they find out I'm from New York, practically squeal with delight. One older woman in Germany told me "OH you're from New York?? That's my favorite city in the world! I have never been but maybe some day!"

This is accurate.

However, many foreigners I've met have a negative view of California. They've visited LA (Venice Beach, Hollywood etc) and hated it. And they think that the rest of California is like this.

San Francisco seems to be kinda popular with the foreigners though.
