PS. He visited the Buffs but said he didn't feel comfortable going to school that far from home.

Heard the family moved from Austin to Bend for coaching reasons.

All the more reason he should have gone to the Buffs. Kids need to get out of the bubble and evolve.
I cringe when the top HS talent, especially of European descent, doesn't go to altitude for college. If you aren't competing in the Mountain Region that tells me you aren't fully committed to running or have ignorant advisors if you are.
Altitude is as close to legal cheating as you can get.

Altitude is just altitude, it's nothing related to cheating. Is having hills to run up cheating? How about having a track to workout on?
FYI, Bend is at some Altitude, where he is living now but if you are concerned with getting "close to cheating" then an altitude tent is the way to do it. You can still "train low" for workouts but sleep at altitude. Anyone who is good enough to earn one deserves one, and some who are not good enough or not good enough yet may be fortunate enough to have the parents to buy it. Or they can get a summer job and earn it.

Maybe I'm a poor writer and didn't get my point across, which is that altitude IS LEGAL, and works better than nearly any form of cheating (oxygen vector drugs or blood doping). Therefore, it's like legal cheating.
Bend is far too low to be of significant help. I have lived at altitude and I have lived at sea-level with a room converted into an "altitude tent". I can assure you that altitude tents do not compare to actually living at altitude. Tent are mostly a nice way to be able to use EPO and have an excuse as to why your reticulocytes are all haywire, which then lets you avoid an adverse analytical via the blood passport.
Bend, Oregon's elevation is about 3,700 feet above sea level, but within just a couple miles, there are extensive trails above 5,000 feet.
