It's not a marathon and it's not going to be hot out. And what's worse, I would have to wake up at 4:15 to watch it from the West Coast (can't imagine West Coast-based athletes are thrilled about it either). That's assuming there is a way to watch it, which there probably isn't. They should have it in the early afternoon. Guess no one wants to miss watching all their fantasy football players on Sunday.
Races in general start early around here. Usually at 8am.
The 12k runs down the George Washington parkway (I think) which is a major route to get to the airport. Closing it off at all is an inconvenience for a lot of people.
Yea it's a little ridiculous. I live out in Arlington and do not drive. The metro and buses to get out there would not get me there on time. Most races this time of year start at 9:00, which would have been perfect for this race. I think it has something to do with road closures but if people can't get out there to watch or run USATF is doing itself no favors for its popularity.
Yes, it's a PITA, and I only live 20 minutes from the race. Earliest race I've ever been in. Basically, unless you're local, say within 20 miles of the race, you'll need to stay in a hotel, unless you want to get up at 4 to get there and warm up in time.
It's going to be cold tomorrow morning -- at race start it will likely be low-mid 30s.
Probably for traffic. lame though.
The only other big race I've heard of starting this early was NYC Half at 7:15 or so. A couple years ago Ritzenhein blogged that he never even fell asleep the night before, which makes sense as he was coming from Pacific Time and probably wanted to get up 3+ hours early so he was essentially waking up at midnight on his body's clock.
I figured it had something to do with traffic. You'd hope they could make better arrangements for what is supposed to be the road race "national championship" of championships.

Philadelphia Marathon (and Half) next Sunday start at 7am. Runners were told to get to starting corrals by 5:30am to avoid lines at security and porta potties.
Have they been able to implement some means of stabilization on their camera(s), so that the video is not so jerky?
Is Hutchings really going to be in on the play-by-play for this?
Alright, I dragged my ass out of bed for this (and I live on the East coast).
Seeing this thread made me smile though - at least I'm not the only one. Why does the race need to be on a major road in Alexandria? Find a better area. Make the start later.
