Just like Solinsky never went after it, right? Stop being dumb. They race plenty, they just don't race when it doesn't make sense.
Solinsky never "went after it," he showed up to a record attempt set up by Galen Rupp to do what he said would be a "glorified tempo" and realized he was in great shape. The Schumacher cult would never take the initiative to set something like that up themselves.
They don't race when it DOES make sense. They'll run USA's, make the team, and not race again until the championship in which they'll usually bomb. One time they showed up to the Armory, on one days' notice, to get their 5000m qualifiers out of the way. I don't know how it's possible for anyone to be a fan of them, they just disappear for months on end.
I like Chris Derrick, but doubt he'll ever break 27. Few do, and the event seems to be dying out anyway.
A lot of these arguments about Schumacher's athletes not racing enough are questionable to me. The elephant in the room is PEDs. Maybe some athletes are able to run more elite races because their recovery is enhanced by PEDs. Maybe Salazar's athletes get their blood levels fine-tuned with a cocktail of drugs, and are able to maintain a peak for a long time. Maybe Schumacher's athletes are doing it clean? Who knows? It does seem surprising to me how runners in the Diamond League are able to just peak for months on end. With the specter of PEDs in the background, it's hard to know what is real and what is chemically enhanced.
The 10k is dying out, for sure. Runners like Derrick need to plan for the future: track 5k and the roads.
I think he could but he will need the right circumstances. Solinsky had an ideal situation and ran a great last 1000. It is unlikely that Derrick will get into a fast 10000 race paced like that. If it is "fast' the goal may be 26;40 so he would have to run a lot of the race by himself.
Like another poster said, half marathon and XC may be his best focus. I could see sub 60 in his future and I could see him as a good marathoner (207-208)

This. Exactly.

Oh man, that's some great info. I didn't know he was *that* young! I thought he was coming up on 25 already. Well now I'm really optimistic. 24 is very young.
Do you pride yourself in being a dick?
Well, how could he run sub 27 in the past?
Maybe Rupp will calm the feud between the training camps by pacing Derrick to a sub-27:00 10000.

What? I think you have your sarcasm meter up too high. 24 is very young for distance running and I thought he was about 25. What's your problem?
Chris Derrick is America's next great marathoner.

Huge Chris Derrick fan! Watched him race in Illinois when he was in high school.
Unfortunately, he will never fulfill his potential under Jerry S.
Not a HUGE Derrick fan...However, freakin comma, I think Derrick is a very patient, long term planner. He is very smart guy and It would not surprise me at all for him to surface, when he wants to, say Trials and be a deadly threat to everyone or even win it. He will surface on his terms.
In the 2013 World XC Champs (12k) he came through 10k in under 27:30... was that marker short?
And Ben true came through in 27:20

Great runner and will have a decorated career as an american but he's got no shot at sub 27. He came up here to canada this summer for a meet to run the mile and was only able to run 3:59 high in a rabbited race. To be able to break 27 you better be able to run at the very least 3:34 for 1500m (3:50 mile). He's not a raw speed guy.
I think he will be great at the marathon though if he gets far away from Schumacher....
Derrick will break 27. Only problem, it's hard to find a lot of 10K track races.
He has a way to go, on the world stage, to run with the break and kick well in a major race, that's a taller order than breaking 27.

There are sub-27 runners that can't run 3:34

Oh, wow. I understand making it approximate, but over 300m off? What the heck.

Not necessarily true. Ritz never broke four minutes for the mile. His 12:56 and 60:00 half (on a hilly course with bad weather) show he was capable of a sub 27 10k if he had gotten into the right race.
