The conventional wisdom is that it requires less effort to run at a certain pace on a treadmill than it takes to run at that pace outside.
I have no reason to doubt that, although I'm not sure. I do most of my running outside and when I use the treadmill, my indoor and treadmill paces for a comparable effort are roughly the same. That said, I'm not monitoring hr, blood lactate, etc. and I have no idea whether the treadmill I use is calibrated accurately.
Anyway, assuming that it is true that the treadmill is "easier," why do so many people suggest increasing the incline of the treadmill ramp to account for this difference instead of speeding up the treadmill belt? Unless you are racing on a course with a constant 1% incline, doesn't it make more sense to just train at a faster pace on the treadmill?
