Talent is just as big a factor as hard work.
Being able to do 70 mpw+ and still reap benefits (which means not burning out or getting injured) is hard work and pure talent.
of course you have the occasional freak who can run a 4:15 mile with 30 mpw but this usually isnt the case unless you can tolerate high mileage for several years.
I'm not joking. Most high schools don't even test. People would rather pretend prep athletes are all clean, it's the elephant in the room of anti-doping.
as Bad Wiggins implied some get there through peds. Others are fully developed early. If you have the body of an adult at age 14, you can train like an adult for 4 years in hs. Others have really good coaching. Some have been in the sport for 15 years by the time they graduate hs. Talent plays the biggest factor. If your first xc race is sub 17 you're going to run faster than the guy who can't break 21 without training.
