I wonder if the record was Rupp-certified, or if it will end up being like the controversy at Mt. Sac this season...
The ranch dressing finally ran out at this particular saladbar.
I'd love to see him, Fisher, and Ostberg bang heads again at Footlocker. I assume Maton will be running NXN with his team though.
In all honesty, we might be seeing the future of American distance running in these guys.
Remember how Ritz, Webb, Hall, and Tegenkamp were all mixing it up in high school?
Maybe this is the beginning of a new cycle. One can dream.
American men need a new cycle of runners. Rupp is on the down slope. Centro is inconsistent. It's time for some new blood.
Rupp was tempoing at state his senior year. He ran about the same time his junior year. Maton is getting closer, but still isn't quite to where Rupp was in XC.
I would guess that Rupp was capable of around 14:30-35 if he was going after it his senior year.
What did Rupp go on to run for 5k that spring? 13:37. Do you truly think Maton can come close to that on the track this spring?
I agree that Rupp was undoubtedly in better shape than Maton when he ran the course record, and I don't think Maton will run 13:37.
To Maton's credit though, Rupp ran 13:37 in a professional race, not a high school one.

To Maton's weak mile, Webb ran his HS record in a pro race, not a high school one.
Maton's track PRs won't be anywhere close to either Rupp's or Webb's or any other of the great names, whether those HS records were run in a HS only race or not.

NXN instead of Footlocker? Won't be hearing of him in college, if he dodges the real HS national XC championship.
You do know Maton ran a 4:03 mile last year as a junior after getting 3rd at Footlocker. He ran just as fast as Webb ran his jr year. Not sure why this guy is being downplayed so much when he is improving leaps and bounds and very capable of running a huge mile and 5k when track comes, has a great chance to win footlocker
Rupp's 13:37 was in late July in Europe, not in the spring.

Can he win an NCAA cross country title like Rupp and his mother?
"Rupp's 13:37 was in late July in Europe, not in the spring."
Meaning, Rupp had already graduated from HS. It is not a real HS record set while actually in HS.

What does a professional race have to do with it being to his credit vs a highschool race?
It was a professional race, in Europe, and post-HS graduation.

Apparently, everyone else who is at all familiar with HS records considers it to be an HS record, so you're likely overruled on this one.
High School records I believe are considered so long as the student has not actually started college in order to avoid the possibility of a limbo time during the summer after a student's senior year. For all intents and purposes, until a student actually starts his/her first college semester/quarter (provided he/she is going to college of course), all performances will be considered high school performances.
I suppose there is always the problem of what to do with a student who will not be going to college at all, but I'm fairly sure that scenario will almost never happen, since almost all record-setting high schoolers will be recruited somewhere regardless of their academics.

Rupp was a professional runner out of HS. He DID NOT run for a college his year out of HS.
Maton's mother was an NCAA cross country champion and his father ran 1:46 or so for 800.

Unless, of course, they turn professional. Cain ran 4:04 while still in high school but it will never count as a record. Webb ran 3:53 in a professional meet, but since he didn't get paid it counts as a high school record.
Does anyone find this a bit absurd?
