Obviously anti-inflammatories help decrease pain and swelling, but I also heard you don't want to take them too close to a hard workout since they elevate heart rate or cause some other detrimental effects. Anyone know any negative side-effects of anti-inflam's that will detrimentally affect my training other than the occasional upset stomach and other minimal side-effects listed on the bottle?

Some like Ibuprofen will thin your blood if you take large amounts and they make you pee a lot, so be careful about hydration.
Taking more than the recommended dose for a long period of time can cause anemia due to blood thinning and internal bleeding. Also, too much can also cause you to bruise easily. All caused from blood thinning.
There are a lot of possible side effects from any medication. I think that the dehydration is a minor one from NSAID's.
Typically to develop an ulcer and bleedig you need to be on the meds daily for a period longer than a few weeks. So it is probably ok to take them for a week or two safely
The newer cox-II drugs such as Celebrex and Vioxx which are prescription do not inhibit platelet aggregation and therefore do not "thin the blood".
That being said, anytime you take a medication it is possible that you may get some odd side effects, so stop the meds if you are having anything odd going on. One of my patients used to feel more fatigued when he was on Celebrex for a week or two.

Anti-inflammatories block the conversion of arachodonic
acid into prostaglandins. Probably various prostaglandins
are responsible for a hundred different effects in the body and brain. I often wondered if the supercompensatory effect
after a tough workout was negated by taking Advil/Aspirin,
etc.
Inflammation may be an important part of the growth after
specific training.
