The most famous HS course record in the US was taken down by junior Austin Tamagno today. This kid already owns the sophomore class record at Mt. SAC in addition to breaking the 1600 freshman national record (4:09) and the sophomore national mile record (4:06). His time eclipses Ryan Hall and Jeff Nelson to name a few. He should be the current US #1 after this weekend. Will he win the national title this year?
Austin Tamagno owns Mt. SAC, 14:23!

Here is an article on the race:

Jeff Nelson's 14:32 back in the day will always be the greatest performance in Mt. SAC history in my eyes. The course back then was about 15-20 second slower than today's course, plus he made it look so effortless. Kudos to Tamagno, but Nelson's name should have an asterisk on the all-time list.

If you were old enough to see Jeff Nelson run in person then you are too old to post on the Internet. Enjoy your parry mason reruns and leave these millennialist alone to take down the old records.

I think this is actually a very interesting question: What is the most famous HS course record?
Mt. SAC is up there, but it has three strikes against it-
1. Mercado isn't an all-timer
2. The record is (was) relatively recent.
3. 14:24 at Mt. SAC is intrinsically inferior to most of the performances below
My pick would be Virgin's 13:50 at Detweiller (Full disclosure: I'm from Illinois). Over 43 years it's withstood Derrick, Verzbicas, Sage, Torres, Spivey, and Graves, among others. There are some better records performance-wise, but none have that history or pedigree.
Other contenders-
Fernandez's 14:24 at Clovis
Ritz's 14:10 at the Michigan International Speedway
Cheserek's 11:55 at VCP
Reina's 14:36 at Balboa (though I've always been suspicious of those mid 80s Footlocker times)
Cheserek's 14:53 at Holmdel -

Now wait just a minute. Tamagno's signature performance this year is an 8 second win where he barely surpassed a Daniel Mercado record. Fisher got a 34 second win and came within 1 second of a Dathan Ritzenhein record at the Portage Invite. Fisher is still #1. -

Sorry to the OP but when you win by 8 seconds over a non-legend and 3 more over another your course record doesn't amount to much. -

Fisher is a stud. He is a heavy favorite for FL.
Tamagno has run 406 and is a good story.
Virgin's CR is the only one that I know about. He's a legend and no one has been able to beat it. Mercado is far from a legend. -
"If you were old enough to see Jeff Nelson run in person then you are too old to post on the Internet...."
People our age actually invented the internet and know how it acutally works. Ever even heard of a socket? -
You don't know about Van Cortlandt history records?
That's embarrassing. -
The thing about the record being held by Mercado is that while he was not an all-timer, others who ran slower were.
Jeff Nelson ran 8:36 on the track.
Ryan Hall...
A slew of other runners including all sorts of 8:4x guys including Acosta etc.
I think it's likely that the Virgin record is better, but most strange is that Mercado even had the record to begin with, considering who else has run that course.
The other guy who has run 14:24 is Moussa, who ran 14:0x in high school on the track and is part of that dominant Colorado squad at the moment. -
Anyone know which college he has a preference for?

Not sure how Mt. SAC's course record stands against others but Mercado is kind of an anomaly by holding that record. Look at who he ran faster than, a few are big names.
Austin Tamagno, Brea-Olinda 14:23 (2014 Mt. SAC Invitational)
Diego Mercado, West Covina 14:24 (2005 Mt. SAC Invitational)
Ammar Moussa, Arcadia 14:24 (2010 Mt. SAC Invitational)
Elias Gedyon, Loyola 14:26 (2010 Mt. SAC Invitational)
Tal Braude, Torrey Pines 14:27 (2013 Mt. SAC Invitational)
Ryan Hall, Big Bear 14:28 (2000 Southern Section Division IV finals)
Mohamed Trafeh, Duarte 14:28 (2003 Southern Section Division IV finals)
Garrett Corcoran, Villa Park 14:29 (2013 Mt. SAC Invitational)
Brandon Bethke, El Toro 14:30 (2004 Mt. SAC Invitational)
Sam Pons, South Pasadena 14:30 (2010 Mt. SAC Invitational)
Phillip Rocha, Arcadia 14:31 (2014 Mt. SAC Invitational)
Elias Gedyon, Loyola 14:31 (2009 Southern Section Division II finals)
Ammar Moussa, Arcadia 14:32 (2009 Southern Section Division I finals)
Jeff Nelson, Burbank 14:32 (1978 Mt. SAC Invitational)
Mark Matusak, Loyola 14:33 (2003 Mt. SAC Invitational)
Tim Nelson, Liberty Christian 14:33 (2002 Mt. SAC Invitational)
David Luna, Indio 14:33 (2013 Southern Section Division III finals)
Caleb Webb, Big Bear 14:34 (2014 Mt. SAC Invitational)
Bryan Fernandez, Dos Pueblos 14:34 (2012 Mt. SAC Invitational)
Ammar Moussa, Arcadia 14:34 (2009 Mt. SAC Invitational)
Austin Tamagno, Brea-Olinda 14:34 (2013 Mt. SAC Invitational)
Elias Gedyon, Loyola 14:35 (2009 Mt. SAC Invitational)
Chad Hall, Big Bear 14:35 (2006 Mt. SAC Invitational)
Ryan Hall, Big Bear 14:35 (2000 Southern Section Division IV prelims)
Lane Werley, Martin Luther King 14:35 (2010 Mt. SAC Invitational)
Heyden Wooff, Camarillo 14:35 (2009 Southern Section Division II finals) -
There is only one mark on that list pre 2000. Course changes make the current record a lesser one.

I think what some are saying is with the course changes in the '90s in particular that it clearly has gotten faster and just as clearly Jeff Nelson's time would have been faster.
"There also can be no doubt that the then-course record of 14:33 run by Jeff Nelson in 1978 was done over a much tougher and challenging course surface than the current course record of 14:20 run by Diego Mercado in 2005."
This is a quote from Mt. SAC's website. See more here -http://events.mtsac.edu/ccinvite/oldsite/coursemisconceptions.htm. -

Maybe Fisher is the heavy favorite, but he is a bit more mechanical than Tamagno. Chalk that up to the soccer I guess. None of the guys ranked in the Top-20 have a stride as fluid as Tamagno's. Brannigan is the only one that can match his mentality.
Tamagno has a very good chance at winning a national championship this season, whether he runs at NXN or FL. -
This was a D1 & D2 Individual Sweepstakes Race.
Brea Olinda's Austin Tamagno competes in D3 but, chose not to run with his team in the D3 Sweeps Friday the day before. He was also given an exception by meet officials to "move up" and race in the more competitive divisional races this year (D1/D2).
Would he have gotten the record if he ran in his own division as Mercado and Ammar had to? Who knows. Great race though! -

Yes, because stride fluidity = likelihood of winning footlocker. Tamagno is a great runner, but Fisher is the king until deposed. And his stride is fluid as well.
