While I hope to run a marathon one day, I do not see it this way: running = marathons.
My point here is not so much about running marathons, but the extreme lack of knowledge about what running really is. For instance, someone (who knows I run) once asked me how my last marathon went. Puzzled, I answered that I have yet to run a marathon, and I have never discussed running marathons with her. She had thought that all races are "marathons"--no idea that a marathon is a specific type of race, one of 26.2 miles. She did not even know what these other non-marathon things are called. I explained that they are races.
The other response I always get when running comes up is this: "Oh, yes, my so-and-so (fill in brother, sister, aunt, cousin, friend...) ran a marathon." What is the response to this? Seriously, I do not know what to say without sounding ridiculous. I have raced 5k to 10 miles, and am currently training for a half (which is in two weeks). It seems, though, anything short of a marathon is chicken feed to these people. Also, there is never any discussion in regard to pace or age or anything else that avid runners might discuss. It is hard to discuss 10 or even 13.1 when so-and-so has run 26.2 (or has so-and-so perhaps walked 26.2?...but that would be rude or arrogant to point out).
I any case, I now just avoid discussing running. I welcome your insights.
