I heard the summing up and it seems to me the judge found that it was Reeva Steenkamp that was the guilty party for apparently going to the toilet in the middle of the night, without all due care and attention:
“ How could she have been so reckless as to have not shaken Oscar awake before going to the loo, knowing, of course, assume the noise of her going to the toilet was a heavily armed gang of black youths invading the house? It is far too much to have expected a famous person like Oscar to have called out, “Is that you Reeva?” or for him to have felt the pillow next to him to see if she was there, before he fired four bullets in self-defence, not meaning to kill anyone, through that toilet door.”

At least its long enough to end his athletic career. Who can come back from a 5 year break? I doubt he'll do more than compete at a paralympic level again.

Here in South Africa the court of public opinion and the media are ruthless,so I don't think there is much coming back for Oscar,maybe a book in 10 years time where he tells the whole truth and pitches it to Oprah.
But I can assure you here he is the brunt of most jokes and most people have lost all respect for him.Feel big time for Reevas parents that they don't know the whole truth

5 years seems really really short. Not sure about ZSA law but I'd imagine he could get parole after 2-3 years?
Correct he will serve a minimum of 8 months then be reviewed by the correctional services to serve a further 2 years which could result in being sent to home supervision.Will be incarcerated in a medical wing of Khosi Mampuru II prison(weird name I know)3 kilometres from the courthouse.
A media frenzy now,will die down soon and he will be yesterdays news.(South Africans are a fickle lot)We are now going to focus on the Dewani case(google that).A pity its not the good publicity for a small country at the bottom of Africa.

With the technological advances in prosthetic limbs, Oscar will be able to set a WR in 5 years time.

No, this shows that South Africans are "soft" and empathetic. It seems you guys are willing to turn a blind eye to dopers too.
I truly believe Oscar can come back and set the WR but it's going to take him a few shots to get it.

When OP petitions for early release/parole let's hope he gets denied. Serving a full five years isn't enough.

Nope, none of the above. The empathy of the judge is comparable to the empathy shown to the dopers in your country. Forgiveness my @ss- off with their heads to anyone who cheats, steals, kills, lies.
House arrest and community service would have been more than enough.

I didn't follow the trial as closely as some. Questions for those of you who did follow the trial closely. Was it ever established in court whether
1) Pistorius' home had a burglar alarm;
2) his home had been broken into.
should clarify - whether his home had ever been broken into. [it obviously wasn't broken into on the night in question.]
