Can someone else pick up my marathon number for me? The website says it must be done in person, but does that mean I can't give someone else my license, registration and a letter authorizing them to pick it up for me?

seems pretty clear that it's you and you only.

You must pick up your race number in person at the ING New York City Marathon Health and Fitness Expo. We do not mail race numbers, distribute them at New York Road Runners, or give them out on race day. A ChampionChip (for non-chip-owners) and complete instructions will be included with your number. After you pick up your number and chip, you will receive your UPS baggage-check bag and sticker. You will also receive your race goody bag, which includes your official race shirt, the Official Program, your Marathon Eve Dinner ticket, a ticket for you and a guest to attend the post-race party, and snacks and treats courtesy of our sponsors.
To pick up your number, you will need:
• your registration card, which we will mail to you in early October
• for entrants who are residents of the United States, Puerto Rico, or Canada, state or federal government-issued photo identification, such as a U.S. driver’s license or DMV photo ID
• for international entrants, a passport. International ID cards are not accepted.
