he hasn't raced in a competition of note in quite some time (since Oxy in May of 2013, really), so makes sense. Put up some very impressive times in 2011-2012. Good luck to him in his future endeavors.
Wiki reads as much.
He's a good guy and a smart one. He'll be missed. Well, he's BEEN missed.
I knew he made the move to NY and was developing a business with Steve Finley, but didn't realize he was retiring. Would have been interesting to see him give it another shot with Gags - did he train with NJNY at all before hanging them up?

Spoke with his Dad this summer and Chris said Russell retired. I didn't ask but believe he may have done some workouts with NJNY and Gags.
Nice career. Sadly injured in 2012 at the Trials but very gracious after his last race there.
Russell Brown was a very good runner, but, honestly, he was a middle of the pack elite. He had a chance to make the olympics, but he did not quite make it. He had little to no chance for a medal in the Olympics or WC.
At some point you need to start living your life. You need to start making more money than a middle-pack elite makes. It's near impossible to have a real career and be an elite athlete at the same time. Yea, it's possible to have the time for training, but not during the hours to train with other runners. Let alone the time to travel to meets.
Additionally, many jobs require more than 8 hours a day from time to time. What happens if you are slammed at work and need to work 10-12 hours a day for a few weeks. Can you keep up your training during these times.
At 29, he was out of time to get better. At 29 most people are ready to start settling down more - a career you can do for the rest of your working years, a family, etc. You need to make more money to do everything you want to do now.
Running at all elite level does not last forever. Knowing when to hang it up is the sign or a mature person.
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
