Nice. You do realize it was like 24k though. Also, Kilian raced the vertical mile the day before. So, Yes, it was mountain running but you have to realize this distance is not really what Kilian is best noted for right? He trains and runs 100 mile races and wins. Take Bekele who has been training for the marathon and see what he does against guys training to run faster at shorter distances right now. Curious how old you are. My bet is you young guys have no respect for ultras. My bet is also those over 40 have a much greater respect for them. Of course younger people don't have much respect for anything these days.

fact is ultra running is a relatively new thing which no really good runners have taken up yet.
Which is why some hard working but not super talented guy like Jornet can dominate.
Kimetto would obviously murder Jornet in the marathon and also probably be an hour and a half ahead in a 100 mile race if he trained for it. I think he would beat Jornet by an hour if they went out and raced today.
That's how poor the elite level is in ultra running. And that's me being kind to the PR king Jornet

100miles with 33,000ft+ of vertical gain in under 23 hours, lots of off trail, river crossings, storms, lightning, night running and mountain passes over 14,000ft altitude.
No prize money to speak of

You cannot compare the 2, the same way Killian wouldn\'t be in the top % at a marathon its ridiculous to think ANY top marathoner would even compete at a mountain race.
As was stated, Kilian won the VK the day before, had all three of the titles in skyrunning (VK, sky and Ultra) wrapped up for the year and it was his final race of the year... Dude still threw down just for the fans.

That's exactly why there is no talent in ultrarunning, no prize money to speak of while marathons are awash with cash prizes and endorsement money relative to a few years ago.

For those of you unfamiliar with the likes of Jornet, he ALWAYS runs the VK the day before the SkyRace. For the past 6 YEARS. This is not new. He did it in Montana before racing Sage at the Rut, besting Sage by a landslide.
Here's the deal. The first damn a decent African lines up on Kilian's turf, the African destroys him. It was even a RACE. Mamo basically did a solo run through the mountains while Kilian battled for his ego.
You guys just don't get running. And by the way, NO ONE over 45 in the US know Kilian. He is known by the younger 25-35yr old age group in the US.

It is pretty simple. Right now, to be a top level ultra guy, you need to be capable of a 2:18 or so marathon, with a strong inclination towards being a better distance runner rather than a speed guy. Killian has pretty handily beat Sage and (I believe) Max King, who are both capable of running a marathon in the teens with focused training.
If you want to downplay or scoff at what it takes to train and run a sub 2:18 equivalent for basically no money, well, you've got some pretty high standards and expectations. I for one selfishly wish ultra running was still like it was 15 years ago, when a 2:30ish marathoner could come strolling up and have a shot at winning a race of any note. But those days are long. gone.
Ah, yes, of course they are all sub 2:18 guys. If you are going to lie, you might as well make it a big lie! Like our Friend Collin DNF, who thinks that Jornet would be the fastest white marathoner in the world! You need to one up him! I think he'd run 2:04!!!

The East African dominate EVERY distance event from 800m up. What in god's name makes anyone think they wouldn't dominate ultras if they chose to enter them?
The reason they do not enter those events is that right now they can still make more money running the tracks and roads. If more D and E level Kenyans decide to take a run at the ultras, the'll come in and scoop up that money too.
Dumb. Mamu is the top African runner out of the dozens that have been in mountain racing in the last decade. His specialty is the short distances that are set up for the world mountain championship series. Out of the myriad of astounding, grueling, and record-setting races and mountain climbs that Jornet has won and set over the last 5-6 years, he loses a short race to one of the top people that specialize in it, and now what? He's not that good? Too funny! Mamu is not even close to Jornet's Skyrunner overall points, the vertical climb points, nor the ultra points. Even though Africans have tried, they cannot compete with Jornet in this area. In this particular race, Jornet knew already that he had the Skyrunner series all wrapped up for the year. Mamu is not even in the top 10.
What is your "D" class African? I am pretty sure if you put an "A" class African of your choice, he would get destroyed by Jornet in 90% of mountain events after whatever training you put him through. Jornet even holds the record in their backyard...the ascent of Kilimanjaro... In a little over 5 hours, beating guess what, a Tanzanian mountain runner's former best time!
Killian definitely has 2:10 speed. Probably could go 2:05 with a couple years of just marathon training in his prime. You're right he couldn't keep up with the 2:02-2:04 guys, but you have to understand that he is built for longer distances.

Yes, I have also feared Kilian is not clean. Spain has a bad history, and I remember watching a documentary about him where he was like, "I have to win." Not encouraging.
I didn't know who DeGasperi was, but it sounds pretty likely that he's doping if someone so close to him was caught.
I once had christmas eve dinner with Kilian Jornet in the States. I was at a friends house who knows him really well. I had no idea who he was. I fancy myself as a bit of a runner nerd as well.
