Out of curiosity, what talent is necessary to walk on and be able to compete for Colorado University? With the recent article on their coach, and all of their success, naturally I'm interested. Academics a non-issue, the only question being running, are there certain standards that need to be met before even considering Colorado as an option? Also, as I've lived all my life at sea level, in a hot and very humid climate, how should that effect my decision/chances of walking on?
You probably need to at least run 9:15 for 3200 to consider CU. Maybe even more like 9:05.

Would that be at sea level? Or does elevation make a difference

If you run under 9:15 at sea level, I would be willing to bet you could walk on at CU. Under 4:15 for the 1600m is also a pretty good mark to ensure a walk on spot.
What I'm also curious of is how much does prior training effect the chances of being let on the team? Running 9:15 on 35mpw is more impressive than on 80mpw, and shows more room to grow I'd assume
It all really depends. If you can run a 9:20-9:25 3200m and be able to pay for school without any athletic funds you might be able to walkon.
Be willing to work hard. Be willing to make running and team a priority. Be willing to forgo partying it up on Wednesday night. Be willing to show that you are dedicated and desire to be great.
Wet more has taken kids way slower than 9:15 that do these things. You may be sucking hind teet for awhile but eventually you will be good.

I got in contact with them over the summer and they told me about 9:13/4:16 roughly. It's never a set standard for walk ons but thats what he told me would earn you a spot.
I have briefly corresponded with the CU assistant coach before. He said their rough standards are as follows...
800: 1:55
1600: 4:15
3200: 9:20

Look Mankato State told me I needed a 15:30 to walk on there. That is about what Chris Valente ran and he went to CU. College coaches will tell you insane times to scare you away because they can not have 50+ guys out there. The will take you if you work your ass off everyday and listen yo everything they tell you. If you show you are dedicated they know they have something to work with.
Now that being said if you are a 10:15 guy then hard work still ain't going to cut it.
why can't they have that many guys out there? The most successful high school teams have twice that many or more. Just because they train with you doesn't mean that you have to cart them off to meets out of state or even in state.

When did Mankato tell you that? Certainly wasn't the new coach I bet.

Thanks for the input everyone. Grades are not an issue for me, however, I will have to bust my butt to hit those times. I'm a junior currently, and in the middle of a big improvement curve right now, so it's not out of reach. But I'm not going to be unrealistic with myself. I would like to reach my maximum potential in running by attending a college with a good, successful program, so my eyes are on Colorado right now, but there are many other good options if I cannot meet their standards.
Based on my performance the rest of this XC season and performance next track season, I will start to narrow down my choice schools and options. Academics will be a major factor as well, but I don't want to attend a school that is prestigious academically but leaves me as the fastest guy on the team as a freshman.

Because the program pays for shoes, clothing, and gear for everyone on the roster. It's expensive even to have a walk-on that doesn't race.

if only there were a book - say...written by a runner, following a CU team through a season, warts and all. Wish that existed- would be a great read.
