Daniel Komen's 7:20 WR will last 3 more decades at least.

1.)first and foremost, you might look up,the definition of "bestiality" before you do anything else today

2.) komen did not wear a watch in practice. I saw this on more than one occasion in teddington. he also threw pacing to the wind in practice sessions, and kim would let him run wild

3.) komen did not really "burn out" because he was tired of the scene. he essentially just lost his focus. the hardest thing for a man to do is be able to deal with success. failure is easy.

I'll agree that it'll be a long, long, long time before someone breaks that record. The thing that put Komen over the top was the fact he'd run a 3:46 mile and 12:39 5k. With that range, it's no wonder he ran 7:20.

If he'd ran a 5,000 on that day, just think, he could have come through the 3k in around 7:30 and maybe end up running close to 12:30.

Many people think that 12:39 (in poor conditions) was in the same league that bekele's 12:37 WR.

I dunno. 3:46 is about equal to Geb and Bekele's performances. His 3:29 might be better time to use than 3:46, but maybe my calculator is incorrect.

Komen's 3000 is a great record but it's wrong to think that Bekele, El G, and Geb couldn't do it had they had better race conditions.

I'd think Silas Kiplagat has as much potential as Ndiku for the 3000.

Your 3 decade window is arbitrary.

It just takes one serious athlete to get it.

Runners rarely even go after any fast times any more.

I think it would just take a financial incentive.

Instead of giving money for place, give money based on time.

It will change their racing habits.

Give $X,000 for sub 7:30

Another $5,000 for each second under 7:30.

You may not get the record but you will get faster times and we will better know the runners true potential.

Now, if they can't get 7:20 or 12:37 they just look around and go for the win.

Funny cause most seem to prefer races run for place and not time.

I know I'd rather see guys battle for a win then chasing a time.

When runners go for time they will instinctively try to win as well, so you get the best of both scenarios.

And a lot of people here like to see them go after the clock.

And what time you run makes a more lasting impression.

Komen winning that 3000m race in Rieti so many years ago would never be mentioned if it wasn't fast.

Who won the Rieti 3000 last year?

Who was second in Komen's race?

When looking back, people remember what place someone got in a championship and what time they ran in almost any other meet.

We know Wheating ran 3:30.90 in Monaco 2010 and Manzano ran 3:30.98 this year.

We don't tend to care what place they got unless they won (which they didn't)

You should have written a thread titled "scientists will not develop any significant PEDs in the next 3 years that elude testers" because in reality that is the view you are expressing by saying the 3k record isn't going to be broken.

-keeping in contact with many of the Kenyans that came through over the years, you are correct in this statement. he wasn't burned out, however. in the end, his hubris was his kryptonite. in '96, he was like a caged animal...always pacing in a room, for instance. in the end of '98, his demeanor had changed significantly. he was comfortable.

Komen's record is great, but El Guerrouj obviously was capable of breaking it (or at least coming VERY close). So far, I really can't see why so many on this board think this record is "better" than the 3:26,00 or the 12:37,35.

For Komen the 3000m probably was his best distance. Not so for Morceli, El Guerrouj, Gebrselassie and Bekele.

Didn't ElG just make one attempt at that record? I think it's crazy to believe that 7:23 was the best he was capable of. He didn't focus on it because he was trying to be the best 1500m runner ever.

You're correct in saying El G, Geb, & Bekele were all capable of breaking the record.

Komen was capable of running 7:18 though. He was better in 1997 than in 1996 when he set the record. And he was at his absolute career peak during the indoor season of 1998.

Mo had the best shot of anyone is a long time of going for the record last year. He should have struck while the iron was hot, but he seems pretty disinterested in records, which is a shame.

He was a big on the scene several years ago in the 1500.

I don't think that Mo Farah have or had the best shot last year...he Is not that "front-fast pacer-time trial " type of runner.
