Nobody with perfectly good legs will sacrifice a normal life to have 8 years of "possibly" competitive running that could be subject to a rule change at any moment.
This girl is not an example of that.

Yeah, the article makes it pretty clear that the good leg isn't really all that good. Directly from the article...

Aron Raston, the dude who got his right arm trapped, cut it off, wrote a book, and had a movie mad (127 Hours), claimed in his book that his experiences after removing his arm lead to so much happiness for him that, "Next year, I'm going to cut off my left arm and see how much faster I can go" (Epilogue, one of the final paragraphs).
I will do anything short of cutting of my limbs to be the best runner I can be. If someone else wants to cut them off and gets the gold, they can have it. I will just be standing by enjoying my limbs.

I read the article. I don't necessarily agree w/wanting to amputate a healthy leg. On the other hand, I can see where a healthy leg takes a beating due to compensating for the loss leg when doing a sport activity---hence the imbalance but to ask a surgeon who has no stake in a person wanting to compete for their personal goals versus not wanting to amputate if there is no health/disease issue of the leg does not seem right. It seems like it's an easy cop out, " I realize I can run faster w/a prosethic leg but hey, my good leg is getting in the way--maybe I should get rid of the good leg so I can be EVEN better and faster to compete in the Olympics! I've seen plenty people w/one amputate leg running and they were FASTER than me! Bottom line...if she got her other leg amputated and helped her run faster to qualify for the Olympics, is it like doping or cheating to give her an advantage? Just my humble inquiry mind that wants to know...
To clarify the above, I don't see a surgeon amputating a healthy leg regardless of patient's prior damage to the leg that was brought on by personal endeavors. I've had hammer/deformed toes that have given me problems in the past but I would not have them removed. I managed fine w/them. No need for surgery.
