I suppose so, but there's really no way I won't get accepted... I think? I meet the base requirements to get into the honors college.

Why would you want to walk onto the team at Umass? That is a terrible program, look at the kids there and how they develop? Go as far away from there as possible.
If he actually does look at how the kids develop then he will see Coach OB does a better job then most coaches out there. OB has never been fortunate enough to get the talent most teams get and yet he has done a great job with what he has been given. Not to mention it seems like half the coaches in NE have come from under his tutalege.
To the op - letsrun is not a good place to get unbiased info - ask coaches around NE and go talk to the UNH coach and OB. Then you can make much better decision.

Heh yea, that's for sure. I think I might wait on contacting them though... I don't wanna waste their time as I'm still pretty slow. Thanks for the info.
Just to give an update for anyone who might be curious about umass' current standards.
I sent Coach OB an email expressing my interest.
I had a pretty disappointing spring season and only managed 4:52/10:31.
"Thank you for your interest in the University of Massachusetts Running program
It is a dynamic area to be a distance runner. Plenty of local races, great running environment, and people who enjoy and pursue distance running.
At this point your performances fall short of what the intercollegiate XC and T&F teams have as a cut of to join
We have limits on the size of our rosters – thus we have performance standards to belong.
Enjoy the area,
Best wishes
Coach OBrien"
Not exactly sure what would have cut it, but it seems like you really need to show that you can contribute almost immediately. Also, it also seems that you have to be on the roster (I asked him if I would be able to train with the team, but not be on the roster). Sucks for me, but understandable. Now I just need to find people to run with in Amherst.
excuse that redundant also
It is tough to hear, but I don't think you'd enjoy being on a D1 team with those times. You are in a frustrating place ... clearly you have some talent and are a decent runner, but even if the coach let you join, is it any fun not going to races, getting killed in workouts, etc.?
Your times are sufficient for D3. Still not great, but good enough to give it a shot and enjoy it.
Don't let that dissuade you from continuing to run though. You are better than 95% of the people who have ever tried it. Problem is, D1 is for the top 1-2%.
Thanks, I'm sure I'll find my niche somewhere :P

Sounds like you're a perfect fit for ZooMass Amherst.
