How about corporate CEOs who run a fast 5k but steer clear of the marathon?

Those are the unemployed basement dwellers. Lots of them here as well.
Those CEOs are hobby joggers.
Schlogging through a 4 hour marathon DOES NOT make you a runner.

That's the attitude that makes nobody care about track and field. Runners are stuck up pompous entitled morons that think they are better than everyone. The mass populace knows this and has no care to watch those types of arrogant people run in circles.
Try celebrating and congratulating someone who runs a large company and still finds time to run enough miles a week to run 26.2 miles in 4 hours.
Seriously how much training is needed to break 4 hours?

I ran a 3:54 marathon. 5 days per week. Long runs built up to 20 miles, did 3 20 milers, then tapered.
It was way harder for me to break 18 in the 5K.

No offense, but I could have broken 4 hours as a 12 kid with very little training. Well, whatever, jog on my friend, jog on.

No offense. But I could have broken 18 as a 6 year old with no traing other than on my tricycle.

"Could of." Great story, bro. I'm super convinced.
Having worked with some of the best runners in the world I have more respect for the guys/gals that do the 4-5 marathon. They do it for themselves. Elite runners for the paycheck.Your attitude guarantees that this sport will continue to be an Olympic year bounce.

But did they look relaxed?

How about the hardscrabble 2:20 - 3:00 marathoners who also do train on their own with little or no compensation?
I could crabwalk a 4 hour marathon when I was 3 years old. I could also do a sub 5 hour century ride on a unicycle, I just never tried.
I 2nd this.
I HATE when people find out that I run and start talking about their uncle/aunt/brother whoever who will go out every couple years and slog through a marathon in 4,5 hours. Please don't talk to me like they're on my same level. It's almost as bad as asking me if have ever done or will ever do a "tough mudder" or "spartan" races.
Let me say anyone that runs a marathon gets my respect (especially if they are faster than 2:41:06). But to see someone out there 4-5 hours, I bump it up a notch on the ole respectometer.

what stupid logic
that, if true (I'm not agreeing it is), is NOT the reason track is unpopular
further, is someone who plays a game of pick up basketball a basketball player? hmmm?

A Spartan race would make you go crying home to your mama.

Presumably CEOs could reside in basements.
