How is that possible??

The front three hit that first 200m hard with accelerations. France waitied till 220m to go and turned it up. At about 170-180m to go, you can see the legs get flat for the leaders and France's leg drive start to go and eat up ground.
Well, that was impressive

Looked v. impressive, but when I timed it it was 'only' 49.7. So worth about 50.4 in an open race. Good enough to have won the individual race at the Europeans, but no great shakes historically on a global scale.
I think Rooney's very realaxed looking 43.9 last leg in the men's race was probably more impressive, especially considering he ran the entire last bend wide, practically on the line with lane 2!
That must have resulted in him running about 2.5m extra, so it was more like a 43.5/43.6 split, or around 44.2/44.3 for an open 400.

The Ukrainian runner noticeably slowed down.
That commentary is absolutely fantastic and I can't even understand it. Pure excitement.

Dammit, stop it ventolin. It is easier both to accelerate and hold speed on the outside of the lane. Everyone knows this. They do it in the open 400 too. MJ himself ran most of the 1st turn wide in his WR.

What's funny is that as the lap is underway, one of the (French) commentators declares confidently that "the podium has already been decided with the front pack... there will be no podium for the French relay team, because there is no coming back from [that deficit.]"

You have a point mate, but please don't call me Ventolin. I am not him and I think the guy is a d**k.
Also remember that lane 1 isn't the best lane to run, even if wide in the lane, for the reasons you give.

Not true. If that were the case the 2nd lane wouldn't need to start further up than the 1st lane.
Amazingly executed run by the French anchor, and a great example of why it's not always great to go into the last leg of a 4x400 or 4x800 in the lead (or close to it in this case).
The three anchors racing each other for the win absolutely overcooked it and got walked down so calmly!
mj split 42.9 in lane 1.
