Only 10 states remain without a sub 4 minute track mile run on its soil: NH, ME, VT, DE, WV, SD, CO, WY, NV, and HI.
Which state will be the last to see a sub 4?
I think the northeast will get wiped out in the next five years, as will NV. My money is on Wyoming to come in last, but Colorado and Hawaii could put up a good fight for that distinction.
(If I'm wrong about any of these, please correct me. I know someone went for DE this past weekend, but I couldn't find the results).

There are eleven states without a sub 4. You missed Alabama and Mississippi.

Odd that no one has ever gone sub in Hawaii.
You'd figure someone would have organized a professional race there. It's not as if people wouldn't like to go to Hawaii. That in and of itself would be a fantastic draw. Having a fast race at sea level helps, too.
Well, considering the lowest points in Wyoming and Colorado are still like 4000ft, I'd say it will probably be on of those. Given the only university in Wyoming is in Laramie which is at 7200ft, I'd say sub 4:00 in Wyoming is going to take quite a while.

Appears to be some question on AK whether it was actually in state. So you didn't have Alaska, Alabama, and Mississippi on your list. And Maine has seen sub 4's.

Alaska does have a sub 4. Jack Bolas ran 3:58.3 on September 13, 2013.

OK, Sorry maths, so 11 states with no sub 4. Even at altitude seems strange no one did it in CO with all the world class guys training there. If the thin air is such a factor I would agree that WY and CO would be the last.

The Denver altitude is worth about five seconds in a mile according to the NCAA tables. The bigger issue is that nobody will come to altitude to run a mile (or longer).
At least some people in Colorado are interested enough to put up money as an incentive: $2500 for a sub-4 was offered for a race in 2013 and went unclaimed.

So I think Colorado will get if before a number of the others.
And I'd wager that when the last person currently reading this board draws his or her last breath, there will still be multiple states without a sub-4.
Which means none of us will know which state was last.
Steve Pifer ran a 3:41 1500 in Boulder a few years back. Just a matter of time before sub 4 for the mile in Colorado.

In the 2008 Big 12 race in Boulder, it was Manzano who ran 3:41.80 for the win; Pifer was second in 3:43.65.

Lowest all weather track in CO is at 3400' in Holly (4 miles from KS border). Negligible elevation effects.
Lowest in WY is 3800' in Greybull, west of the Big Horns.
People may be forgetting about the great indoor track in Birmingham AL, where the MR is 4:02. I have no doubt that there will be a sub-4 at the Crossplex, and probably soon.

Colorado Carnation Board and The Board of Tourism should get together offer a good payout for a sub four and use it as a promo piece. Call it The Run For The Roses -
