Didn't drink at all until I was 26, then single malt scotch and occasionally wine socially for the next five years, never more than a drink every week or two. Slightly enjoy certain beers every now and then though I've actually been getting into mixed drinks and have put together a significant home bar since January. Probably have a single drink 4-5 nights a week and never more than two in a night.

I personally can't stand bars, drunk people, people who talk about how much they drank, or people who think drinking is an activity in itself. I still haven't been drunk I don't think, but I can enjoy it as a more reflective or conversational activity at the night. Not trying to say that this is better than people who drink more or less, simply my preference as someone who can relate to what you're saying.

Your message doesn't go over well because you're being a condescending jack*ss about it. If you're over the age of about 22, nobody cares if you don't want to drink.

You just need to hang around with people who share your interests. Non-drinkers exist. Make friends with them instead of drinkers.

I don't know how you can feel like you are "the only person who feels this way outside of Mormons and the other super religious." Even when I was in college at a school known as one of the country's biggest party schools, I knew plenty of perfectly normal people who didn't drink regularly.

Drinking is not for everyone, brother. I have been drunk probably 6 times in my life...5 in college and once accidentally after college. While I certainly had a stage in there that I liked at least a little bit, I never found being drunk as something I craved or even just couldn't wait to do again. Not everyone drinks.

I'm also mid 20s and I don't understand alcohol. I've tasted maybe 0.5 litres in total in my life and every time it just tasted awful. But then again I don't understand most things.

Then don't drink. Go out and order a snack and a glass of water and socialize. Or go home. Who cares?

I'm not going to get self-righteous and claim that I never over-indulge (although very rarely), and generally I think you make some valid observations in your post.

That said, I corrected one of your statements, as noted above. I am a self-professed beer snob and microbrew afficionado, and I drink beer almost exclusively for the taste. And, therefore, I usually cut myself off if I'm approaching a point of numbness that inhibits my ability to appreciate the flavors.

Could I buy a case of Budweiser for what a 6-pack of good microbrew costs? Sure, but if getting drunk is not the objective then what difference does it make if you pay extra for the quality taste of an "expensive" drink.

I am with you in that I don't see the appeal of alcohol but while my viewpoint doesn't fluctuate sometimes my behavior does. I do drink on occasion. There seems to be a nexus link between being social and drinking where I come from. If I want to be social, I kind of have to drink.

I tried an experiment once where I kept a six pack of beer in the fridge for about 10 days. It was Rolling Rock. I never really wanted to drink the beer in the fridge yet if I walked into the bar I'd suddenly want to order that same beer in a bottle. Weird considering the six pack cost me $5.99 and the bottled beer in the bar cost $3.50.

OP, sometimes i feel you but i like drinking for 2 things.

1) Nice to blow off some steam Fridays and Saturdays. I don't like it enough to have a beer with dinner, I will occasionally have a glass of wine with steak or pasta but purely for taste. But knocking them back on Fridays is a lot of fun I find, especially if you go to fun places with a bunch of girls or good bros.

2) Social lubricant / makes it easier to talk to random people at parties. I usually have to attend a couple work functions every week and it just makes it easier to talk to some rando I have never. Also helps talking to the shorties.
