If his thinking was the marathon was a possibility for Rio, it would have been better to try to get some championship race experience wouldn't it? He isn't a runner who chases world records at the distances he is the best at, so perhaps wasn't likely to be suited to a race at a new distance where the leaders usually goes through halfway in WR pace.
