Question for the Americans - why do so many of you walk around with a giant coffee in your hand all day? It looks rather odd.
I was in the lobby of a biotech company last week, waiting for my host to collect me. While I was waiting, a party of 3 guys arrived and each of them had a damn Starbucks in one hand and a briefcase in the other. When they had to sign in, they were fumbling around trying to find places to put their coffees. A couple of minutes later, their host arrived in the lobby and I swear to God he had a fvcking coffee in one hand as well. The switching of coffee from one hand to another and the putting down of briefcases to permit a handshake was about the funniest pantomime I think I've seen.
So, my question is - WTF?
Americans - why do you walk around with your coffee?

They like to create the impression that there is no time to sit down for a coffee.
It's quite similar to people who have a bluetooth as if their hands must be free at all times. -
This is actually a really good observation.
American culture is tied very closely to the idea of "striving" for success. The more you do, the more you will succeed.
In Europe, I noticed how strange it was for people to simply walk peacefully or sit and wait. You almost never see someone not frantically "going" somewhere in the US.
Sitting down with a coffee while maybe having something to do is not a circumstance most Americans are comfortable with. Getting work done is almost the exclusive reassuring circumstance for some.
It makes me tnk of the difference in social responsibility in Europe vs the American dream, which almost always just talks about the effort involved in making money. -
Cuz we don't want no faggy little expresso cup with a little droplet of coffee in it.
We're Muricans dammit! We got manly hands so we need manly cups of manly coffee! -
Because this is Amurica. We guzzle caffeine by the vat but shake the finger at people who toke a little cannabis. A country of type-a coronaries waiting to happen...

Americans are very energetic and typically workaholics. That is why their country is the envy of all others. They use coffee to keep them going and drink on the run because they have so much to do. They don't take siestas like Mexicans or long lunch breaks at the pubs like we Brits.

Yes. The coffee gets cold. Europeans have cafes and know how to slow down.

The relevance of that being what, exactly? I was asking why Americans do this and as far as I can tell that is not related to whether I'm from Russia, Dubai or Kenya. -
Americans live in a to-go culture. We rarely slow down and simply enjoy the cup of coffee or whatever else is going on. When we do, we tend to bust out our phones and entertain ourselves through the quiet thought time, thus not allowing ourselves to relax at all. We're on the go and no one will slow us down!

I sometimes walk around holding water

I walk around holding gas.

Because I have things to do and would rather spend my free time doing something other than sitting in a cafe alone.

DAMN YOU OBAMA!!!

I like to sit around and watch the world go by, but I don't like coffee. I enjoy the cafes in Paris where I can just sit for hours. If only they had diet Mtn Dew.

It's what we do, bro.

I am an American who sometimes walks around with a cup of coffee. Sometimes I want to walk around, and sometimes I want to drink coffee. Sometimes the desire to do each of those things arises simultaneously, and I don't see any reason not to do both together. Of course I'm not a mind reader, but I imagine many Americans feel similarly.

Americans often tend to be in the act of rushing around -- seldom content in the moment where they are and/or who they're with.

Many people just like to drink coffee. I'd walk around with a beer in my hand at all times if it was legal.

why do people always walk with a starbucks coffee cup? How come I hardly see a Mcdonalds or 7-11 cup?
