She very easily crushed the field, which included an 8:53 girl. Could she go as fast as even 8:40 at this point? She made that look absurdly easy.

I don't think she'd be dipping under the 8:40 mark, but I wouldn't at all be surprised if she ran in the low 8:40's (8:42.xx, maybe?)
Saw the race live. She covered every move with ease, was constantly boxed (sure, her down fault in a way), and looked like she was jogging on purpose to hold off to the end. My vote after seeing that and how fresh she was after? Under 8:45. Maybe under 8:40. Easily under 8:50 without doing much more than she did. I had predicted her as silver, but 800m in I knew that unless someone was surprisingly ready, it was her race.
And the 3000 split in the 5000 was ?
Race had weak field and you know it.
She claims she was ready to go 8:40 if that was the pace.

Jesus. I know some people find her hyper-exuberance a little bit much after a while, but Christ is she impressive.
I'm even more impressed after watching that interview than I was after watching the race.
The confidence, the composure, the sophistication about racing,... are really something else.
(Maybe if Morgan Uceny could hang out with Mary for a few months, some of it might rub off.)
After watching tonight, I'd have said she could clearly go 8:50, probably go 8:45, and who knows? Maybe 8:40's not beyond the pale.
Watch out for Mary at the end of the season.

For a true middle-distance type whose real wheelhouse is 3K to 5K, I'd put 4:05 and 8:45 as equal. Someone like Cain probably needs to be in closer to 4:00-4:02 shape to run 8:45. I'd say definitely under 8:50 with 8:45 being her ceiling...for now.
First off, she is in 4:00-4:02 shape, and 2nd, really? That's what it takes to run an 8:45? The average runner can do 1500+20x2 for a 3k time, for an elite runner like Cain she should be able to at least do 1500+17x2, at most 1500+15x2, for most 3k-5k types it's 1500+13x2... Having that said Cain can run around 8:32-8:36 right now...
