He was pretty much immediately kicked off the football team.

never ceases to amaze me hoe ridiculous these top college and pro athletes in Football and Basketball act....almost like they think they are above the law. They make millions and go broke...really sad.

"it sounds like this is the story:

Bethel drives for a layup. Battle thinks she is athletic enough to block the layup from behind. Battle runs into Bethel from behind trying to block his layup, knocking Bethel to the floor. Bethel immediately jumps up, turns around and punches Battle in the face. Battle's jaw breaks in three places, she looses several teeth. Blood is all over the court. Battle goes to the hospital for medical treatment and has surgery to reconstruct her face bones on Sunday morning. She won't be able to talk or eat solid food for a month."

I haven't read through all the posts but most agreeing his reaction was indefensible/inexcusable/criminal etc.

Yeesh, that is horrifying. I hope the victim recovers quickly.

If you look at his facebook or twitter page, his theme is all about getting out of the hood, working hard at sports, and getting his big payday eventually and there are a lot of inspirational type quotes. And he has just under 5000 facebook friends. Who has 5000 facebook friends at 19? It sort of shows what kind of value people put on athletes. I bet he doesn't have any plan if he doesn't go pro in football.

A significant development in the story. The female basketball player involved has been suspended for the month of November for her role in the incident and has issued an apology stating that she "initiated the first contact."

The school is not making clear what that contact was but it seems evident from the suspension that it was more than a hard foul in the course of the game. From discussion at the fan board about eyewitness testimony, the most likely scenario now seems to be something like this:

They went up for a rebound together and came down in some kind of dispute. She pushed him hard enough to knock him to the court (there is no question he somehow wound up on his butt) and he came up punching.

As for the apparent psychology of the incident: she's the senior star on the women's b-ball team; he's the freshman footballer coming into her domain; she gets assertive about it; he ups the ante.

No question he is gone from Texas Tech for good. Still remains to be seen what if any charges will be brought by the DA.

Why any charges for him? What about for her? She battered him. He was defending himself. Is it that hard to understand? She should be locked up. She is the agressor.
