I also see a 3-1 Germany win. But somehow they will squeak through to the next round.

This is all hype and why Americans will end up rejecting soccer. A 1-2-1 record sucks. In what other sport would this record be "remarkable"?

It's slightly complicated. If the US loses by 2 and Ghana wins, Ghana qualifies. If the US loses by 1 and Ghana wins by 2, Ghana qualifies.

However, if the US loses by 1 and Ghana wins by 1, Ghana only qualifies if they score at least two more goals than the US (e.g., Ghana wins 2-1 and the US loses 1-0.) If, say, the US loses 1-0 and Ghana wins 1-0, the US and Ghana will have the same number of points and the same number of goals scored -- the second tiebreaker -- and goals allowed (hence, same goal difference, the first tiebreaker). The next tiebreaker is head-to-head, which, as you may recall, the US wins.

Basically, if the US loses Ghana can only win by the reverse score or by the same margin in a lower scoring game. So if the US loses 2-1 then Ghana can only win 2-1 or 1-0.

There are three tiebreakers:

1. Goal differential (US and Ghana would be tied on this)

2. Total goals

3. Head to Head (US has this tie-breaker)

So if Ghana wins 2-1 and the US loses 1-0, then they would still be tied on the goal differential tiebreaker, and then the US would be behind on total goals. But if Ghana wins 1-0 and the US loses 1-0, then they will be tied on the first two tie-breakers and finally go to head to head, where the US wins.

Because they win the group with a tie, but they only finish 2nd with a loss. So...zero incentive to take any risks.

If the US were a title contender, they'd have some incentive to play for the match win and thus the group win, but the reality is that the US would be thrilled with a tie and going through second in the group.

Dear lord. JK is starting Brad Davis and Omar Gonzalez. Something is afoot. Let's hope this means the Gentlemen's Draw is agreed upon. Gonzalez is understandable given Cameron's mishaps last game. Brad Davis is the worst player on the roster.

Fans singing the whole anthem in true soccer style. Why can't Americans learn to do this for other sports instead of simply cheering like morons over the last two lines while the latest American Idol or Youtube sensation is doing their own awful rendition? There's what, 10,000 US fans in the stadium? That was beautiful.

Just saw that Ghana sent Mutari and Boateng home. If the rest of the Ghana team is pissed at its coach, Portugal could win [or at least draw] and the US go through whatever happens against Germany.
