We think Huddle will win, but who gets second and third?
In writing it, we were struck by how deep the USA is right now at 5000. Has it ever been this deep before? Abbey D may have the sizable New Balance deal but she's got only the 8th best PB of anyone in the field at 5000.

US Women 5000m running is relatively weak. The WR is 14:11. The US national record is 14:44.
That would be like the men's US record being 13:06 in terms of percentage slower than the WR.
Not many US women are even within striking distance of sub 14:50. American men have a slew of 13:low guys ready to bust down that barrier, like Jager, True, Mead, Derrick, Lomong, which would put them close to Lagat's AR.
American 5000m women need to step up. Our national record holder is an afterthought in the diamond league.
Rowbury has the class to take 2nd or 3rd.
Don't forget Hasay / she can take them all down. She is about to impress and fulfill her potential.

If the US women's 5000m record was the same percent slower than the WR as it was for the men, it would be 14:29. The actual record is 15 seconds slower (14:44).

The 12:40 barrier has been broken 3 times.
By contrast, the 14:50 barrier I cited has been broken 378 times.

There are very few women close to the US record.
Cheers, fellow Fan of US Distance Running. I am not attemoting sarcasm in the least when I say you are absolutely right and I agree completely. Since when is US women's 5000 deep, impressive, or anything other than a JV competition? Only 2 have ever (EVER) run a time that is not laughably bad, and neither ends up remotely near the lead pack on the big stage.
Whether times or medals are your metric, in this particular event, the US rules compared to Bhutan. Now I'm not doing much to change this myself and everyone mentioned is far ahead of me, but no one is claiming that I am the salvation of US 5k. Saying I suck is a great rebuttal to an argument nobody is making.
Many of you will say our men are a joke. Being the laghing stock of the international scene is far superior to not being on the international scene at all.

I guess relatively speaking it's deep, but the 5000 for US women is our weakest running event; our national record should be at least 10 secords faster. Right now, we are as competitive in the 5K as we are in the javelin and triple jump, which is crazy considering we are pretty good in the 2 events that bracket the 5k. Also, Molly is legitmately the favorite, but this race is going to be extremely slow and in a 15:20 type race, there are a few girls that will offer up a strong challenge. In fact if Molloy does not start dropping sub-70 quarters with at least 3 laps to go, she gonna be in trouble.
Why does a thread about the women's 5k, become a thread about men?
In 2007-2008, US had 4-5 women running sub-15;00 each year: Flanagan, Goucher, Kastor, Rhines, Fleshman all near top form.
From 2012-2014, going on three years, the only US women who have run sub-15 are Huddle and Simpson. Huddle is about to be 30 years old and Simpson doesn't really compete in the event.
For pertinent competitive purposes, no, the event isn't getting deeper.

Since it apparently wasn't obvious, I was using flat numbers. i.e., 5000m WR is 12:37.
The actual WR is 12:37.35.
