Lebron made around $70 million last year in endorsements and salary combined. His salary accounted for $19 million of that, his endorsements accounted for over $50 million. Taking a few million pay cut from his salary is a drop in the bucket compared to what he could make if the Heat are able to reload and win more titles. Expect Wade and Bosh to do the same.

One does not become a free agent as part of a plan to resign with the same team at a discount.
If he was intent on staying in Miami at a reduced salary, he would have simply renegotiated his contract. By declaring for free agency, he's signaling his willingness to play elsewhere. The endorsements will be there if he can lift another team to a title, and frankly the chances of that happening are better in places other than Miami right now.
