Bethan Knights 9:53 at Brooks PR

Who has run a faster 2mile? I have seen faster 3200's but isn't that an outdoor record?

Bethan Knights broke the National Record for the 2 mile.

According to T&FN, the previous record was:

2 Miles 9:54.22 Aisling Cuffe (Cornwall Central, New Windsor, New York) Greensboro, North Carolina 6/17/11

FT keeps saying it's the 3rd fastest time. Perhaps they are including conversions from 3200.

T&FN does not recognize the 3200 as a record event;

Kim Mortensen’s 9:48.59 converts to 9:52.01

great race! But is 9:54 3200 6 seconds worse than a 9:53 two mile?

If she paced herself more evenly she could have run a good bit faster. With a 10 second differential between the 1st and 2nd mile, she must have been hurting a lot at the end.

actually it was lap 4-7 that really suffered! On the last lap she out kicked Debalsi who overtook the lead on the back stretch.

I got Knights first 6 laps as:

66

75 2:21

75 3:36

75 4:51

76 6:07

79 7:26

Does anyone recall the lap to go split?

They were both really struggling that last lap, which was awesome!

That's what I call a kick, going all out for the distance (though the first lap was too fast).

She went through in 8:42ish so right around 71 seconds

I'm just basing it off of what Flotrack has been repeating over and over. Could be wrong.

At 9:55.05, DeBalsi destroyed the sophomore 2 mile class record. Her time now slots right behind Cuffe's 9:54.22 on T&FN's overall list.

DeBalsi's time is superior to Hasay's best HS performance, 9:55.57 (converted) that Hasay ran as a junior and that is next on the overall performer list.

They could also be counting Cain's indoor 9:38 from last year.

She ALWAYS races like that. She likes to get out fast and race, a bit like Laura Hollander. Bethan is extremely talented and I believe she is going to have a tremendous collegiate career.

2 Mile. They always run the 2 mile in Boston (it was the NB Indoor Grand Prix)

Absolutely ridiculous how fast girls are running these days. Golden age indeed!!

At CAL....NO

Unfortunately, she didn't have her big track breakthrough until April. She was a 10:30 3200 type until this season. I think Oregon, Washington and Stanford may have passed her up. Bet they wish they could get a do over on that one.

I agree, Cal is where talented distance runners go to die, where is Lauren Chetalat (9:52 at the CA state meet). Cal must have awful coaching to screw that one up.

That said, Cal really knows how to pick under valued runners. They always seem to pick up runners who tend to have a break through right after the runner signs with them. Unfortunately the coaching staff doesn't know what to do with them.
