How long would it take you to run the Marathon World Record Time? (not counting rest breaks)

Probably 2.5 days - 10 reps of 2:21 in the morning, 11 reps at night and repeat once. Then 10 reps of 2:21 in the morning again.

That's around 5k pace for a 15:00 5k guy. Maybe 400s at 5k pace with 1:30-2:00 recovery, do as many as you can one day without fatiguing completely, get serious recovery, then shorts sets throughout the day on a second day. My guess is that would be the fastest way...

Not counting rest breaks it would take me exactly 2:02:23

Even if you can do 800 to a mile at the pace, the smartest thing to do would be splitting it into 200-300 repeats I think. Just long enough that you aren't constantly stopping/starting, but short enough that it's basically a sprint and you can rely on your fast twitch muscles for the job.

With 200s at 35 (211 needed) or 300s at 52.5 (141 needed) I think it would take me 2 or 3 days (2 sessions per day), probably 3 in current fitness.

I don't think you could do that in 24h if you can't run even a mile in 4:42.

I have PR's of 4:29 for the mile, 15:50 for the 5k and 2:39 for the Marathon and I don't think i could do it in one day. Here's how i'd try:

10 a.m - about 40 sets of 300m, i could do it in 52 seconds resting about 60-90 seconds between each. Would be totally spent in the end, but with the required goal, I'd take about 2 minutes between each. It would be a long time, but wouldn't be that bad in the end.

Would sleep until 5 p.m. Would try as many 200m as I could in 35 seconds. With proper rest I could complete about 10,000m.

Would sleep again until midnight.

I can't really say if i'd wake up after that, but maybe i could throw some more 200m and then you have 32.000m.

would sleep for 3-4h more and wake up early in the morning for the last session before 10 a.m.

an easier way of doing it:

one day has 1440 minutes.

I need 210 sets of 200 meters around 35 seconds.

that alone will take 122.5 minutes out of those 1440.

So i still have 1317.5 minutes to rest 219 times between the sets to finish in under 24h.

Thats about 6 minutes/rest.

Seems doable - 210 sets of 200m resting 6 minutes between. With a couple of isotonics and coffee, I think I have a chance (Marathon PR - 2:39).

I might try it one day actually.

7 sets of 12x500 in 87.5*

Take plenty of rest between reps, 2:00+ if needed.

Could probably do 3 sets in the morning, with ~15-20 minutes in between to rest, hydrate, stretch, etc.

Hop in a car, head straight to an ice bath. Then stretch, hydrate, eat, take a nap or just relax, all totaling about 4 hours.

Then you go do two more sets and repeat the rest cycle, this time in 3 hours.

Then go finish the two last sets.

If I counted it up right, this should total about 16 hours.

*(plus a 195 meter stride @4:42 pace, for the dillweed who will say 'That's not a marathon!')

This is a very interesting topic and also makes me feel like crap about myself thinking how hard it would be just to get 26.2 miles of that pace in even with unlimited rest.

I think the 7 sets of 12x500 sounds like a good plan. Although ironically, my current marathon training focus would mean I would struggle with the "speed" of marathon WR pace. I'd be much better off if I was training for the 5K.

You wording was correct, but not for what you were asking. You DO want us to count the rest time! It's not being a d#ck pointing that out, there would be no way to know that you meant the exact opposite of what you were asking!

Dang, I was going 2 seconds per mile faster than I needed to....

I'm on my 24th rest break, btw. So far I am resting more than actually running

Why is this ironic?

It is ironic because for him to run the Marathon world record pace for 26.2 miles (given rest breaks) it would be more helpful to be in 5K shape rather than marathon shape.

Since the marathon WR pace is closer to short rep pace for him rather than longer stuff that would more be the focus of his current marathon training.

Do you guys honestly think that you could run 7x (12x500m) in 16h at World Marathon pace?

We're talking with champions here.

Even if you take a lot of rest, 500m will hurt you at some point, unless you are all sub 2h30 Marathoners.

Best option is definitely the one defined by klosic.
