My resting pulse has steadily rose during my taper from 48 to 54 this morning. Any reason for concern?

no, your pulse will be much higher in the race, dont worry.
I would withdraw from the race. But, since it isn't the olympics, I would race because there is good money to win.
Could be nothing - bad night's sleep, nervous tension, etc. Could be real - beginnings of illness, etc. Worrying will get you nowhere. Move forward and watch. You'll probably find it's nothing.
had a cold over the weekend, but surprised it has not dropped.
I'd call that an immaterial difference.
Anyway, knowing your pulse rate versus not knowing it won't change your performance on Sunday, it'll only make you nervous about it. Heart rate is nowhere near as important as the "amount" of heart.
Go get 'em
It's normal for that to happen. Have a good run in Chicago

When I have tapered for a marathon, three things happened:
1. My legs felt fresher;
2. I gained 3-4 pounds;
3. My resting pulse rate steadily rose
#1 is a desired result of the taper; #2 is likely the result of glycogen stores (that are in a state of perpetual semi-depletion during hard marathon training) being topped off; #3, I suspect, has to do with the detraining effect that occurs with a taper. Tinman has some excellent posts about how quickly certain individuals lose aerobic capacity when reducing their training loads. Anyway, you hope that the benefits of #1 and #2 offset any detraining effect.
And if your marathon doesn't go well? Don't taper as much next time.
If you eat more and train less, then your pulse rate is bound to rise during the taper period. It takes longer to digest food, and also, you have months of training to recover from.
have you run a marathon before? After youve done some, you will learn to just relax and be ready to run tough no matter what. You have enough to worry about in the actual race, dont waste your time worrying about your heart rate a few days out. Ive run some great races where I didnt feel great leading up to them, and some great ones where everything clicked as well. Point being, relax,have fun, and kick butt.
If I had to guess, I would say that the race didn't go so well. I've had a rise in pulse happen to me many times during a taper, but it has always been when I was overtrained. I believe it might be due to the fact that I was always running in a state of glycogen depletion during the heavy training. This suppressed my max heart rate and therefore my resting as well. Just my own observation, but everyone is a study of one.
I hope I'm wrong and you ran like the wind!
you were right, 1/2 marathon in 1:23 right on the dot felt great, perfect 1st half. then quads started tightening fininshed in 2:58. Might have been hard MP 16 miler 3 weeks out
6 beats really isn't anything. A larger, more significant rise could indicate sickness or over-training. A more likely cause is you're sweating less as a result of less training hours so you have more sodium stored in your body, this is especially true if you eating a lot of pasta with a lot of pre-prepared store bought sauce.
