What do you think happens to this kid down the line when he's older? Does he continue to run fast and get really good or will be be burned out and tapped out by the time he's in high school?
What has happened to previous young phenoms like this? What would you do if you had a son/daughter who was really talented and wanted to train hard for stuff like this, what would you do?
He has a coach and says he'd been training hard for this, so he must do some kind of decent training.

nothing, there is too much variability associated with this kid's physical development compared with other 10 year olds to make any meaningful projections. Obviously the kid is talented and will fare much better than the average track athlete, but to predict that he will be a world beater requires more insurance than predicting that a 4:30 8th grade miler would be a world beater.

Sounds way too much like the 10&under 1/2 marathon "WR" of 1:35 we were hearing about the other day [although certainly a more impressive time, whatever its "WR" status.]
A look at the historic US NAG Swimming records indicates that there is a correlation between setting national records at a young age and national and international success later on.
Is there a database for NAG record progression for T&F that one could make similar comparisons?
The Assuma twins of the late 1970's in Rialto, Ca were an exception. They were age-group phenoms as far back as elementary school, and ended up running sub-8:50 2 miles in high school, and sub-4 in the mile in college.

But swimming is way different. Distance runners peak about 8 years later than swimmers.
I ran 35.56 as a 13 year old and I am 25 now and have not came near beating that yet. I stopped running for nearly 11 years. None of my friends ran back then and when they were out having fun, I was running laps of a field out the back of my house which was not much fun. Quit running and started playing soccer instead, way more sociable and fun at the time.
parents, coaches and other runners can be overbearing at that stage. Parents want a star athlete. Coaches want to say they coached a top athlete and overcook everything. I still don't know why other runners were pushy though.
There have probably been four hundred elementary-school age Kenyans and Ethiopians who have broken 5 minutes en route to their daily 10-mile morning run to school.
11 and under 1500 record is 4:21 by a Finn two years ago so thats in the 4:40's for a mile which is superiour to that 4:55 that he is targeting for next year..
still cool that he likes running and is good at it.
too many variables to determine what happens down the road. if he is equally talented at soccer he should probably stick with that. if he's prusues running then he'll probably be somewhere between all state and all american in high school.
kids who are all world in the sprints or the field events tend to be closer to all world in high school or college than the kids who run fast XC or mile times as pre-pubescents. Probably has something to do with neurological imprinting & shifts in fiber types with sprinting and development of proper technique in the field events. where as you have some kid who just plays tag and ball sports and maybe swims and then they pick up running competitively at age 12 instead of age 6 and they are probably behind for a little while but then overtake your 10 and under mile world record holder around age 14-15 and never look back.

Neither. He may continue to run and progress at a consistent rate, he may even be pretty good, but once more of his peers start training to run (and hitting puberty) they will likely pass him up.
10-year-old age group records are weak because very few 10-year-olds care about running at that point.
I knew a youngster who had similar age-group records for 10 miles, half marathon, maybe even 10k - he ran great times in middle school, but never progressed in high school. In fact, I think that the early success set him up for failure later on. Once he started running with the big dogs, he was no longer the star that he once was.
I have a friend who set the state record for 10 year olds, I think it was 5:20ish. He ran 16:10 on a tough course in and 4:26 for the 1600 in HS.
Runs D3 currently but has been injured quite a bit.

And that correlation would be...? What is considered a "young age"?
Not true in other sports. Triathlon and XC skiing, for instance, rarely have juniors who have great international success at the senior level. Road cycling also has a poor history in that area.
I don't know about WR, but I expect this is not the US record even.
I believe Assumma twins and Kevin Knox ran faster at the same age, and that is just from a narrow era.
USATF supplanting AAU and then the move from yards to meters effectively erased the old age group records.
Kids were simply more active and were grittier.
Also, I *think* this kid is a 2003 which makes him "11" for starters. He cant set a usatf 9-10 record. If someone else wants to define something some other way...fine, but its not a USATF 9-10 (or even AAU 10 yo) record if he is born in 2003. Nevermind they dont keep mile records but you get my point.
i watched an interview after the race that states the kid runs twice a week (one long, and one hard run) and then plays soccer.
