Getting faster.
Getting faster.
Going to need to get faster still. He is a good racer in medal meets though.
great time, but did not compete
He's no Webb.
Lol
Yeah, but did he look comfortable?

I wish there were fewer people in the race- the field was crowded. Look at old video's from the 70's (when track was huge in this country) maybe 6-10 guys in a distance race.
Less crowded field maybe Centro would have run faster.
He broke 3:32 a couple years ago, so this isn't really evidence that he's getting faster.
Yes, his 3:31 was a better performance so he is not faster.
3:48 was there for him to get.
Good run. Not great.
This is a very strong early effort from Centro and it seems to me that he could have run faster had he jumped into a better position on one of those two 58 high laps and had a faster split at 1320 and faster guys to chase. Webb is the last American to break 3:50, I think, and he did it a few times.
Correction: Webb ran sub 3:50 twice (3:48.9 in 2005 and 3:46.81 in 2007) and 3:50 high twice in 2004. He also ran 3:51 in April 2007.

Agreed on the positioning. He didn't need to be as far back as he was given the slowish pace from 440-1320. But faster guys to chase? You aren't gonna get anybody faster than Kiprop, Kiplagat, et al.
Track was not huge in the 70s. I was competing then, it was sort of on the mild upswing, but huge? No.
It was sort of big in the 60s in the context of USA vs. Russia meets in the early 60s.
And yes, Centro is no Webb. He actually has medals!
Only 4 seconds behind Webb's PR

I think that was the guy's point.
Centro is a good racer - as long as the fields are pared down via heats or limited in the amount of top runners allowed. In a one off match against say 10 of the world's best, he'll be fried every time. He's good for championship meets, tough and durable. But when it comes down to going for broke to get a fast time, he'll run fast but finish out of the money. Kind of like Rui Silva from Portugal, sort of.

Exactly. Look at Rudisha not in 100% shape and still gets up front and tries to win the race. Same with Simpson

While a PB, Centro himself wasn't happy with the race as he wanted to a) compete FTW and b) break 3:50. We have an interview with him below.
So was there testing at this meet? Any word on the A sample?

Actually it is, he barely broke 3:32 at the end-ish of August in 2012 and his own other sub 3:30 was in sept 2012. So considering his pre June pr is 3:35.44 and his pre mile pr was 3:51.79 from last year, that's a good sign. Conclusive? Maybe not, but def evidence he's improving this year.
Manzanao is the Olympic silver medalist yet couldn't get in the fast heat in his own country?
Let me guess, he doesn't wear Nike.
This early in the year stuff is being over played.
He's a pro. A two time medalist.
And he got whipped by other pros on his home track.
There's no championship to peak for this year.
He skipped the relay champs to focus on this.
This was as important as any race he will run this year.
The others are managing 3:47 miles and 3:29 1500s right now.
Centro's coach just got his other athlete to run an AR this weekend.
So there's no real excuse to not run fast as hell right now.
That being said, he's still pretty fit and has a lot of races to look forward to this year.
I'd like to see him go after the 1500m AR.
But in order to do that, you have push races beyond your comfort zone.
We've never seen him do that.
