Yeah, It seems like many of the best runners are bypassing the 10,000 and going to the marathon where the big bucks are.

Yes, it's always talked about how the half-marathon and marathon, or distance road races (5k, 10k) all draw the East African talent away from the track. But? How will we ever know? Because if you change the variables--more money on the track--then it's hard not to have to consider ramifications/possibilities of that logic... what if there were more money and attention worldwide on distance running and track events? If track were as supported and monied as professional team sports in America, there surely would be some American home-grown talents in the upper echelons of distance running. Although, the facts seem to support that the paltry money and intense competition seems to obscure from worldview the insane talent pool in East Africa, even for all the athletes who manage to get out and compete in/for other countries. ...In an alternate universe, with track and field a billion dollar sport, ... 300 East Africans a year running under 26:50, 12:50, 3:32, etc. Whew!

No. He went 26:44. Maybe he could go 26:35 in another race, but not on May 30. Do you know how much more effort it would take to eke out another 5-10 seconds for him in that race? He knew he was running a PR/AR. He gave it everything he had and left nothing out there. He did not hold back. And it was a relatively smooth even pace, every km was within 2 seconds of each other, which is minimal fluctuation in pace. If the pace for the opening 20 laps was a tick or two faster, he wouldn't have run 1'57" for the last 800. If he had run a tick or two slower for the opening 20 laps, he wouldn't have been able to make up the seconds in the last 2 laps. He ran 26:44, not 26:3x. It was an awesome performance. Recognize it for what it was.
All the United States needs to do is legalize khat. Then all the teenagers will start chewing it, and they will become skinny and hyper and will take to distance running like fish to water. The more I think about it, the surer I am that's the reason for east African "talent."
