The body can only absorb 1 liter (~quart) per hour in most people. So there is little reason to try to take in more than that.
Second, you should have been drinking during training to get a better idea since individuals vary in how much they can tolerate.
It is really hard for someone running a marathon 4:00 or faster to take in as much water as they loss; the goal is to minimize loss.

The link above is a good guide. 12 ounces is about 240ml.
Fluid guidelines suggest at least 4 oz. every 15 minutes. My wife is an RD and says that one mouthful of fluid is roughly an ounce so if you can get in 4 gulps at each water station you would most likely hit the recommended amount.
