Dear letsrun.com:
Inspired by another thread where I saw people speak of the "better" EFFORT that 15 minute 5K runners put through, I feel the need to write this.
For many of us who run 5Ks in the 20 minute range--my high school PR was only 19:50 for instance, so my 20:31 PR in 2013 was not far off, we put in a lot of effort and a lot of mileage to stay with and achieve those times. That is a fact.
And to continually see people who claim to run in the 15-16 range say that the effort is not the same seems to ring as unnecessary negativity with regard to the spirit of running?
So what if we all listened to you and the running world was populated exclusively by 15 or better? What then?
The fact is, at 5'8" 170, I am never going to be tall like Kiprop or slender like Kemboi. I will never look like Ryan Hall or anyone like him. But for people to attribute that to poor effort? That is flooring.
I see people running on the trails,at the beach...and they may not be quick....I may not be quick...but we are running. We are trying. We give an effort--a pretty good-sized one.
There is no resentment for you for your God-given talent. With that, you were blessed. And we all recognize that you try hard and get great results. However, people of my speed would prefer that you run your race and let us be happy with our achievements, regardless of whether or not they are approved of by you or your friends.
Thanks,
Mike
