Wow, just wow, Houlihan pulls off the 1500/5k double taking down the collegiate leader in the process.

Was it windy? Why would Cuffe let the race be so slow?

Because it's only a conference champ and it's a 10k, and the real meets for her are coming up. Pretty obvious reasons.

1 Shelby Houlihan ASU 16:11.63
2 Aisling Cuffe STAN 16:11.97
That's a quick 10k.
Cuffe has shown good speed recently. She probably figured she could win no matter what. She closed in 4:45 and still lost.
It's hard to lead stuff - that's why I was praising Lalang in another thread.
"Strength = speed", eh rojo?

True, but they were BOTH leading at different laps. Houlihan wasn't drafting off of her, she was pushing it too.
Stop with this "MF" crap already. Its classless.

It's just overused. It's the new EPIC.

Guess the little sis is outshining big sis Shayla...
Getting pwned twice by the same runner must hurt for Cuffe.
Anyone else think Houlihan looks like she could be Alan Webb's sister in this picture?

Whatever has happened to Katie Flood? Anyone know?
It was windy. It's always windy in Pullman in the spring.

I am sure a lot of people had Cuffe as the favorite in the 1500m. Even the 5000 is probably not her NCAA meet event.
Houlihan looks fit and fast.

First off, this is the 2nd time she's gotten beaten twice by the same runner in the same meet, hence: Emily Lipari, so she's used to it
And 2nd off, like he just said, she won't have 2 1500's run before she runs the 5k final... Having this said, if Houlihan runs the double I doubt she'll beat Cuffe, if she just runs the 1500m then obviously it won't matter, if she just runs the 5k then it would be very close... Cuffe is not a top NCAA speed girl so the fact that she ran 2 15's before probably zapped her legs... Regardless, I think when Cuffe has Marielle Hall and Dags in the race, it will be a lot of more honest of a pace, a pace that Houlihan won't be able to stick with (or maybe could, but no kick at the end).... Having this said, if it's strung out a little more, Aisling Cuffe could most definitely still win the title, and guys don't forget: Aisling Cuffe's fastest 1k in her 15:11 5k was her last one! She closed in a 3:01 so she can finish strong!
While Cuffe was 4th at NCAA xc last fall, Houlihan was 8th just a few seconds back. So, no stronger to high-caliber distance running is she.
Houlihan focuses on the mile/1500m in track because she has a lot of speed endurance.
If she chose to focus on the 5k now instead of the 1500m, who's to say she couldn't drop a 15:11 like Cuffe did recently?
Houlihan hasn't gotten national attention yet like others because she hasn't run a spectacular time nor won an NCAA title . . . but she's still a junior.
She will be at least a co-favorite for the NCAA 1500m title in a few weeks.
