Official 2014 Big 12 Discussion Thread - Kennedy Kithuka lapped the entire field, beat Ok State's S. Kipchirchir by 1:39

Doesn't the Big 12 have a rule that lapped runners are DQ'd? Maybe that's just for indoors?

Erin Finn of Michigan almost did that last night.

Nice time by Lutz. Amazing a top-tier school like Texas has no one breaking 30:00, let alone have guys running 31:xx. Pretty sad.

Wasn't Lutz 3rd at NCAA last year?

not sure of the indoor rule, but both indoors and out lapped runners aren't uncommon

what a tactic. lap the field and draft off the "front" group.

He did the same thing his 1st or 2nd year in the NAIA before he joined the NCAA D1 level - I believe it was at the National meet where he took off and lapped everyone till he came up on the 2nd place runner where he just sat behind him and then kicked by at the end.

i was there, and kithuka lapped the entire field at around 3500m, and ended up winning by about 600m. kithuka went through 5000 in 14:05, and did start to fade a touch over the last 2k. once lapped, craig lutz did go with him for 1200-1600m, but eventually got shelled. everyone else seemed to be spectating.

The NAIA isn't quite the same thing as the BIg 12 but still interesting.

WHat other events is Kithuka in? I remember reading that he said the Big 12 team title was his #1 goal this year. Is that possible? Could Tech somehow win it? If he's in a ton of events, wouldn't it make sense to chill in the 10k?

Which is why I'm very surprised that he's performing so poorly.

He got absolutely crushed by a slew of runners who really shouldn't be beating him. Is he coming off of a serious injury of some sort?

Shadrack must have been pacing his teammates, then ensured OkSt has 2nd wrapped up. 5 seconds between Kipchirchir and Moskowitz and another 25 before their 6th man (Mathenge).

Why would there be talk about a 28:48 10k? He lapped them because they went so slow, not because he went fast, that's pretty obvious.

Temperatures were still in the upper 80s during the race (http://w1.weather.gov/data/obhistory/KLBB.html), which probably explains why every allowed the huge gap so early. Lubbock is also at about 3200 ft elevation, so while not a huge impact on performance it is something to consider.

You need to read between the lines with these results. It looks like Kithuka was let go, and everyone else (including the UT athletes), formed a lead pack that contended for points by kicking it in the last couple of laps. Notice how close the guys behind Kithuka are to one another.
