It looks like the Lane 5 runner knocked it into Lane 6, who proceeded to collide with it and send it flying 2-3 lanes over to collide with the runners in lanes 4 and 3.
Are those hurdles weighted? If they are, I'm shocked that they were being flung around the track like that.
Those are indeed weighted hurdles. They DQ'd the kid who started the hurdle moving but also the kid who then hit it back across the lanes. Not sure why on that one. They had to re-run the other four kids.
Now THAT is cutting a wide swath!
That may be the craziest race in T&F history!
(condolences to the victims, of course)
Compare to:
Why DQ for knocking a hurdle?? It is a consequence of almost every high hurdle race ever run. It's not like he grabbed the hurdle and intentionally flung it.

Just a bunch of young white kids learn'n to run. No big deal.

This was my thinking. Falling and flying hurdles is just part of the game, and it was clearly accidental. It just so happened that the stars aligned in a hilarious fashion for this particular race.

I'm not familiar with the rules of the hurdles. Is there any provision that states that a runner must actually jump over the hurdles?
The runner who knocked the rogue hurdle over, based on the video, seemed to basically shove it forward with his leading foot on that particular jump.
Dumb blondes ;-)

There were 8 kids in the race initially, so they must have DQ'd FOUR of them, not just those two -- I don't understand the logic on this one at all.

My thought exactly. Just another example of thug hurdlin'.
Sad, really.
First guy knocks down the hurdle. Second guy hits the hurdle with his trail leg. His leg was obviously in the other land, so that's a clear DQ. Whether the first guy should be dq'ed depends on whether the hurdle stayed in his lane after he had knocked it down.
It is in Colorado - any chance the first guy had smoked a little weed before the race?

I believe the re-run was actually for the 4 who ended up on the ground after the incident. According to the link posted to the video, only the leader was DQ'd.
I recall watching a middle school girls track meet where in rainy weather, all but 1 of the girls crashed at some point during the race with 2 not finishing out of 8 contestants.
The classic from China.
Only two taken out here, but they were in a world of hurt:

The ones on the outside lanes finished the race, and their times were valid. No DQ, no rerun.
