Is he being coached by Mark Rowland? If so, that is white the miler group.
I don't want to blow up his spot but the last thing I heard he was in flagstaff getting his feet wet with some over distance tempos for his fall marathon debut. He said if he can pop out a 3:30 1500 he can jog sub 3 kilos all day bro. The real reason dathan left Salazar was to train with wheating for Chicago. Ritz knows Salazar is holding him back and wants to do some serious speed training to break 2:05.

They have a very good group, but I do find it odd that wheating hasn't raced something yet. Even something low key, off distance. Wheating has barely raced over the past few years and while he needs to do his best to stay healthy, he has to race.
Be a shame to be healthy, feeling amazing, but not able to get into good races with no marks to back it.
On a side note, has Wheating ever raced a road mile? He could probably own it. He has come up with a 3:30 running in lanes 2 & 3. He will always have a tougher time in races that are not strung out, but I bet a road mile would feel very different. Not saying he should give up the track for the roads, but maybe he should throw some in like Heath, McNamara, Lagat, Torrence and many others do.
when you've run 3:30 and 1:44, what's the point in running 3:45? His not being able to stay healthy would be one of those killer blows to our running era like Falcon's achilles injury and Ryun's fall at Munich if not for the rise of so many others.
I know, from his time at UO, that he has somewhat of a fragile psyche and usually won't race until EXTREMELY fit. There was even a year when he opened up at UW and Coach Vin put him in heat 2 because he was so bent out of shape about competing.
Of course he won that race in 1:47, qualified for ncaas and then was good. In 2008 Webb had a similar path and didn't open up until PRE despite ripping a sub 2:50 1200 in practice!
Some guys just struggle with that aspect of it.

Well said.
Andy is a talent whose body hasn't caught up but a few times with his pure ability. As a fan and friend I wish him great health until he retires from the sport. He is "good people" from a great family.

I hear you but when you don't race in a long time you have to start somewhere. Part of getting fit to run 3:30 is racing prior to it. He is not gonna pop 3:30 out of nowhere.
I completely get that he needs to stay healthy, but as much of a fan as I am, I still believe his racing head needs some work and experience could lend a hand.
Andy is super talented, but he is not naturally race savvy and yet he has far less experience than anyone at his level. He desperately needs racing experience, assuming his body is ready.
I remember Jordan McNamara was very injury prone. He started back carefully but has been getting after it the last couple of years. I'm sure he is very careful now and diligent in injury prevention, but he is out there racing.
I don't know Wheatings details, maybe he's had something recently that is laboring him, but my sense is that they are being overly cautious now, which the might regret later if he can't get into races or he gets into races that he's not race ready for.
Don't forget Webb ran 3:30 and 1:43. His business running 3:45 was that after too long not racing at his previous level his head got messed up.
Who knows, maybe Wheating will show up at the Intl Mile at PRE, but that would be a tough opener.
+1
At least try to work out some sub 3:40s to appease the sponsors. Even Alan Webb couldn't hold onto his` Nike contract despite previously running his AR under their logo.

Anybody with Flotrack Pro care to give us a breakdown of the new Wheating special they just did?
He was in Boulder in Feb. watching the USA XC Champs. He is going to be in for a very big shock later this year financially if Nike has trimmed his salary already.
Huh? He'll be in a big shock later if they've trimmed it already?

hopefully wheating has gone back to basics.
which is to run 48 sec in the 400 on a regular basis.
check.
then focus on the 800m. and run 144
check.
when those basics are in order, hit the 1500.
check.
with a 332 and the 48 second 400, he's back and ready to take the next step.
certainly after injury speed work is a challenge, but a million stride-outs is a good way to prepare for the 4,8 work. go fast but NEVER push it.
do guys still do slow mileage and jump into speed work with out proper prep, you know select gym work and cross training?

It was a really good video actually. Cool to see the other side of professional running. So far, pretty much every flotrack video has been athletes at the top of their game looking to run big times.
Rowland and Wheating basically said that they are taking 2014 as a base year, getting back to basics, and building forward to the future. They said there is now a good balance of running/drills/cross training/gym work that he did not have before. Additionally, they said he worked on his diet. Seems like Rowland really knows what he's doing, hopefully he can bring Wheating back to 3:30.
