sub 18 minute 5k and averaging over 70/wk for 6 wks beforehand would do it.
Probably an 18 min 5k and 40-50 miles/wk. Idk if that first reply was serious with 70mpw, but I was running about 45-50 mpw and recently ran slightly under 17 for 5k and then ran 1:17.
I ran a little faster than this for my first half back in hs, 1:24:xx with a 5k pr of 18:10ish.
Sadly, I don't have any recent 5ks. But I'm there on mileage.
Since the half is in less than 2 weeks, any track workouts you'd recommend to puff up the confidence a bit?
...The 40-50 miles, that is. 70 seems a bit high...
with 2 weeks to go, you shouldn't be really introducing anything new. This week I'd do something like 5k pace 400s one day, miles at race pace another, and then taper. No long run next weekend. The biggest thing now is to go into the race feeling fresh and well, ready to race.
Then what would you estimate you could run a 5k in? Why not run a time trial 5k on the track as a confidence booster?
Thanks for the advice. As for my current 5k fitness, I'd say probably 18 low-mid, but it's a bit speculative.
Anyone else?
What were your workouts like when you ran around 1:25?
Pace miles? Tempo runs?
I think I'll do some 400/800 type stuff and one more pace run before starting the taper.
before I ran 1:24:59 last year
3 miles at 6:30 (HM pace)... 4 miles at 6:30 felt very hard most days
6 miles at 6:45ish, pretty comfortable (didn't check every split)
The longer tempos at slower than HM pace helped a lot more. Just gotta get used to running in a comfortable rhythm.
That's a pretty kick*ss sub-1:25
I have not run sub 1:25. I tried once and ran 1:26. At the time I could not run under 19 in 5k, and ran about 40mpw at 195 pounds (too big).
I was on pace through 15k (60:20), but really had a tough last 5k, barely under 22. I believe the issue was too much weight and not enough speed. In training I never ran faster than 6:50 pace for any sort of workout.
Wow Oh Please, that sounds like it would have been a tough slog.
The ability to cruise at 4 min km in a steady run is enough.
Your mileage tells you virtually nothing. It is how you cope with the effort.
I ran 1:23 at 17 on about 20 miles a week with a long run of 6 miles and very rarely a 10 miler.
Much of my other running was basically "racing" my training runs which actually works very well if you want to run a half on low miles.
18-low means he has the speed. It's just a matter of endurance, which I also think he has. He should run 1:24 low.
Cruising in the 6:40s is pretty easy now - that's like 4:00/km + a tiny bit
Pace on long runs has come down quite a bit, and I'm finding that my runs are sort o naturally progressing to sub-7 pace. Taking this to be a solid sign
sub 65 minute 10 miler during training with not too many problems

That is a good sign. What feels like 6:40 pace in training is what 6:25 pace feels like on race day. I think you're on the right track.
