This is an odd one, wondering if anybody has any additional information.
New marathon, Starved Rock County, yesterday. Looks like it's in Illinois, appears to be a marathon, half marathon and 4-miler. About 1100 runners but only about 213 in the marathon.
Erik Bergstrom and Chloe Staub are reported as being the first finisher of each gender in the marathon, but they both got DQ'd. The news report says neither ran with a bib, but it uses interesting language as to why they didn't have bibs, "...when they arrived they were unable to locate the bibs that were being distributed to number the runners. They ran without them, which cost them the race." I don't see a way to look up on the race's website to see if Bergstrom and Staub were registered for the race or not, but there is a pre-race report which notes Bergstrom as one of the top contenders which would indicate that he was registered (http://www.mywebtimes.com/sports/who-will-tame-starved-rock-country-s-st-marathon-half/article_153f637a-e877-59da-a11a-9756fd6aa0d9.html). In addition, although it appears that the picture has been deleted from the local newspaper's website, a google image search brings up a picture of Bergstrom (and Staub?) with finisher medals.

Anybody got any ideas about what the story is on this one? Seems to me if these runners were registered and the race couldn't find their bibs they should have been allowed to race. Flip an unclaimed bib over and use a sharpie or something.
