I work in a running store and so may be a little biased. The way I was trained that would never happen. I would take the time to ask about current training, shoes, any injury histroy, etc. And then after a gait assesment I would take the time to explain everything to a customer and why certain shoes would work better. It sounds like you might have had some bad luck at those stores. I actually have a few female coworkers who love the job as much as I do. Maybe the stores do a poor job of hiring; the guy I work for makes sure you have a love of the sport and want it to spread. I love talking to anybody about it.
So no, you don't need to change anything. You've just found some poor stores. Anytime near DC I would say try VA Runner in Woodbridge of Fredericksburg...but then again I am biased. ;) (www.varunner.com)
The Saucony's will work for mild overpronation and a wider foot.
