For a few years I've been collecting vintage running books. The main reason I do so is because training philosophies come and go and you can find advice that seems fresh or forgotten.
Sometimes, though, I encounter a tidbit that makes me laugh outloud. The following comes from "The Competitive Runner's Handbook," written in 1982 (the peak of American running). I think this is the secret training tip I've been looking for...
"Beer: The nectar of the gods, ambrosia of those who seek fast times -- beer may be the runner's fuel. It doesn't take a scientific study to know that a majority of competitive runners, including those of world class, drink a lot of beer...We recommend as part of your daily diet, if you wish, 2 to 3 glasses of beer. If you're knocking down a 6-pack everyday, you probably have a drinking problem."
