Anyone Notice Sean McGorty's 13:37 11 seconds faster than Saarel

saw that - looked like a solid result for McGorty and perhaps a slightly disappointing one for Saarel.

also saw that McGorty was listed as "Unattached" - was that simply a mistake or is there a story?

Doesn't look like Jake Hurysz and Futsum Zienasellassie have improved much since H.S.

Meanwhile, Joe MF Rosa!!! Nice improvement for him this year.

I really do think Saarel just had an off night.

I think he is much better than what he ran last night.

The same thing happened while he was running XC. They wanted to see how he coped with the training. Stanford was going to Redshirt him but then decided against it for championships.

They're probably doing the same thing here, since it was a local meet, they didn't need to decide right away.

The big story isn't so much beating Saarel but the 13:37 and McGorty and Joe Rosa beating everyone from CU.

With Korolev on board, Stanford should have a core that can challenge CU's depth in Terre Haute in November.

Makes things interesting, which is good for the sport.

Hurysz has run 3:40/7:50/13:38. Not many collegians with better marks. He ran a 4:06 mile and 8:49 3200 in high school so has made a pretty big jump. He just hasn't been clutch outside of one AA at NCAA xc last fall (Although he probably should have been a lot higher, he was 4th? at pre-nats).

Futsum was 31st and 4th at NCAA cross his two years of college. He ran the fastest last 2k, he just didn't go with the leaders early on. On the track he made the 5000 last year outdoors.

Both are well-coached and have improved. They are just overly sensitive to injury as Jake missed cross and Futsum indoors this year.

I saw McGorty often in high school. I think he has a shot at running 13:10 or so for the 5k in college - a shot - which is of course a long way from doing so. Best talent in Virginia since Webb.

Rupp 13:37 (as hs senior?)

Pretty strong outing from McGorty, and who knows what he can run later in the season. German dropped about six seconds to US champs that year.

Marc Davis did not run 13:27 as a freshman. Lifetime track 5000m PB was 13:32.8

Yep. Three guys under 13:40 last night.

Give Jim a few more weeks recovery and it's four.

Then add Korolev. Watch out.

(To be sure, they'll lose Olson, but they've got five or six guys with a shot to step up as a solid number five.)

If the twins can stay healthy through the fall, it's gonna be very interesting.

I did see Futsum with his foot wrapped...sitting in a golf cart immediately after the race.

For all the negative talk that I see on this board about Stanford, it;s time to give proper credit to Miltenberg. He's really got the Cardinal running well in his 2nd year on the Farm. The Rosas and Cuffe were of course massive high school starts, but all 3 have stepped up to a new level this year as juniors. And McGorty, just wow.

People will start giving Miltenberg more credit when he starts having better Stanford results at NCAA XC.
