I am really looking for input here.
What do you see as the qualities needed in a coach. What do you see as the process that a coach should follow in gaining experience or to qualify for higher-end, better paying jobs as a coach?
Give it some thought.
time...patience...knowledge...and then recruit in kids who by into your style of coaching...
but to make lots of bucks...you better be ready to pay your dues because those jobs are few and far between...

I coached at various levels for 9 years (HS, JC, DII, Open). Here are a couple of throughts on successful coaching.
*motivation: keeping athletes excited about goals per workout, per race, per season
*optimal performance: How to get athletes at their best when it counts the most
*commitment: This goes with motivaiton, but getting athletes to give the program a long term commitment
*progression: getting from one level to the next
* evaluation: this applys to daily workouts, races, and the whole season for both athletes and coaches
*directional/positive feedback: stay with mainly directional feedback, give positive feedback when need be, avoid negative feedback
*race rehersal: both mental and physical...preparing for the course, competition, weather, stragegy, etc
These are a few of the running principles that have worked for me.

I think that this is a very interesting question, but the answer is that this day in age, qualities are irrelevant. Look at all the jobs filled this summer, head coaches and assistant coaches and you tell me what it takes to make it in the business.
