Desi Davila made $10,000 today

I don't believe that anyone got their prize money increased after Inga Abitova got banned and had her 2010 London Marathon 2nd place and 2010 NYCM 4th place finish annulled. Perhaps someone could ask Kim Smith or Mara Yamauchi if they got anything from the London marathon.

With both Shobukhova and Abitova removed, the top 8 for that 2010 London marathon are now:

1. Aselefech Mergia, Ethiopia 2:22:38

2. Bezunesh Bekele, Ethiopia 2:23:17

3. Askale Tafa, Ethiopia 2:24:39

4. Yukiko Akaba, Japan 2:24:55

5. Xue Bai, China 2:25:18

6. Kim Smith, New Zealand 2:25:21

7. Mari Ozaki, Japan 2:25:43

8. Mara Yamauchi, United Kingdom 2:26:16

The race directors know who the cheats are. Are you telling me they thought this Russian was legit ? If they did they shouldn't be in the job. This will continue all the time they turns blind eye to it?

How would they have known? She was caught due to a biological passport issue, not a single test.

It stands to reason that if Shobukhova pays back the money and Desi moves up in the standings from 4th, Desi should get the money she rightfully earned as the 3rd place finisher. Desi got paid $15,000 for 4th that year; 3rd place was $25,000.

Chicago should do the right thing and pay Desi the $10,000 she should have gotten as the third place finisher, as well as the other displaced runners who ran Chicago from 2009 - 2012 (and London in 2009 - 2011).

Of course Pinkowski will redistribute funds IF Shobukova reimburses the race. What are the chances of her returning prize money? Seeing as how Chicago has already paid, they owe no one currently.

I have no association with any agents, Desi, or anyone else who moves up in the standings. (I run a nonprofit in Philadelphia.) I'm a fan of the sport.

I clearly stated the redistribution of funds ought to be contingent on the repayment by Shobukhova.

You write that "of course" the funds will be redistributed. I'm unaware of how this side of the sport works (appearance fees and such are far from transparent in running) -- is it customary for prize money and other winnings to be redistributed after doping bans? How do races go about reclaiming funds from banned athletes? What is the rate of collection? I really have no clue but would be curious.

Agree that it was poorly written and sounded horrible.

Disagree (strongly) that the Chicago marathon only owes IF they get the prize money returned.

The prize money was advertised for each place. Desi and the other legitimate finishers earned the money, and deserve is for placing in their new spots.

1. The Chicago marathon is responsible for collecting the money from Shobukova.

2. The Chicago marathon is responsible for paying the proper prize money to the other finishers.

There is no way the other finishers should be penalized due to Chicago failing to collect in #1. #1 is not their responsibility in any way. It is Chicago's. They are separate issues and responsibilities.

If Chicago has ANY money at all, it is owed to those other finishers.

Similarly, if I owe you $20. It would be crazy for me (with $1000 in my bank account) to say "sorry bean team, can't pay you your $20 because Johnny Rotten owes me $20 and I can't get him to pay".

Has any drug banned track athlete ever given back their prize money? On a semi-related topic did Armstrong give back any prize money to any of the Cycling Meets. Sponsor and appearance money is another issue I'm talking just the prize money?.
